DEATH OUTSIDE SQUANTUM BAR RULED A HOMICIDE The death of a former Quincy man fatally injured in a brawl outside a Squantum bar in January has been ruled a homicide by the state medical examiner.Christopher McCallum, a 44-year-old Squantum native and father of three, was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center on Jan. 28, a day after he was found bleeding and unconscious in the parking lot of the Robert I. Nickerson American Legion Post on Moon Island Road.A death certificate for McCallum filed Tuesday in the Boston city clerk’s office confirmed that the Bridgewater resident had died from blunt-force trauma as the result of a homicide. The ruling by the medical examiner’s office marks the only public development in the case in the six months since McCallum’s death. No arrests have been made and police have said little about the investigation.Want news like this sent straight to your inbox? Head over to PatriotLedger.com to sign up for alerts and make sure you never miss a thing. You pick the news you want, we deliver.McCallum’s family has maintained that he was sucker punched while trying to break up a fight outside the American Legion post. Police dispatch communications from the night of the attack indicate that police received reports of a melee in the parking lot involving more than 20 people.Within days of McCallum’s death at the Legion post — which has politically connected members, including ward councilors and the Norfolk County district attorney — the Quincy Police Department took the unusual step of recusing the department from the investigation. A spokesman for the department said the move was made because too many investigators knew people who were at the post at the time of the attack. As the months passed with little news about the investigation into McCallum’s death, his family has grown more frustrated.“I am so angry that so many people were there and we still don’t know who did this,” McCallum’s wife, Kathy McCallum, told The Patriot Ledger a few days before the six-month anniversary of her husband’s death. “I just never thought that with the amount of people who were there that we would have to wait this long.“Kathy McCallum had said one of the things holding up the investigation into his death was the medical examiner’s report. In a statement provided to The Patriot Ledger, McCallum’s family said they were relieved to have the completed report.“We look forward to the completion of the State Police and district attorney’s office criminal investigation. We are confident that the justice system will prevail for Chris McCallum and his family,” the statement said.State Police assigned to the district attorney’s office are investigating the death.“The investigation into Mr. McCallum’s death remains active and ongoing. The Norfolk district attorney’s office has no further comment at this time,” said David Traub, spokesman for the district attorney’s office.Reach Erin Tiernan at etiernan@patriotledger.com or 617-786-7320.
