My reading year in 2020 began with Christopher Caldwell’s brilliant book The Age of Entitlement: America Since the Sixties, and ended with Helen Andrews’s equally impressive Boomers: The Men and Women Who Promised Freedom and Delivered Disaster. There was a lovely symmetry about this chance pairing, since the two histories have in common a magisterial contempt for the self-celebratory TO FIND YOUR LIFE’S MISSION, FOLLOW YOUR QUESTIONS Dear Class of 2021, Today is your graduation, an august ceremony in which you will be awarded your high school diploma. You have worked hard and learned much under particularly difficult circumstances this year, and so we justly memorialize all of your labors today. CAN CATHOLICS GET WOKE? One of the reasons woke ideology has been successful at making inroads among Christian communities is that it feeds off the Christian precept to offer compassion and aid to the marginalized and suffering. This leads to a lot of confusion about whether or not Christians can get woke, with many seeing it as the natural outgrowth of that Christian precept. But as I write in my book, Awake, Not NEW POLL FINDS THAT MOST AMERICANS WANT ABORTION TO BE E very summer, Gallup releases the results of an extensive survey of Americans’ attitudes toward abortion, and this year’s poll is especially of interest, as it comes less than a month after the Supreme Court agreed to hear its first major case in decades reviewing a state-level restriction on abortion — Mississippi’s ban on most abortions after 15 weeks’ gestation. HOW TRANSGENDER IDEOLOGY TAKES CHILDREN HOSTAGE Taking oneself hostage is a bold move, but sometimes it pays off. It worked for Bart, the hero of Mel Brooks’s classic it-could-never-be-made-today comedy Blazing Saddles, and it just might succeed for the trans-kids movement as well. Among the latest examples of this gambit is a Variety profile of Jazz Jennings, who became famous after appearing on 20/20 as a six-year-old transgender THIRTY YEARS OF POLAND It was a two-week whirlwind that changed my life forever, that first visit of mine to Poland in June 1991. Looking back on it, I’m reminded of something H. L. Mencken wrote of a similarly transformative experience: “It was brain-fogging and back-breaking, but it was grand beyond compare—an adventure of the first chop, a razzle-dazzle superb and elegant, a circus in forty rings.” WHY DONALD TRUMP MAY LOSE INFLUENCE IN THE REPUBLICAN Common wisdom holds that former president Donald Trump remains the dominant force within the Republican Party. The truth is that his personal influence and standing are not as powerful as many imagine, and his power is as likely to decline as it is to increase. / Posted on April 29, 2020 Justin Amash has a clear and consistent worldview while Jesse Ventura does not.
