Of the 1,001 reported power line contact incidents from 2003-2009, nearly 70% resulted in death. Luckily, these fatalities can be prevented by following these simple steps while on the job. ESFI: ARC FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTER RECEPTACLES An arc-fault is a dangerous electrical problem caused by damaged, overheated, or stressed electrical wiring or devices. Arc-faults can occur when older wires become frayed or cracked, when a nail or screw damages a wire behind a wall, or when outlets or circuits are compromised. Parallel arc: arc between the hot and neutral conductoror between
ESFI: TEMPORARY POWER SAFETY The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) states that contact with electricity is one of the leading causes of construction workplace fatalities. However, temporary power is essential to construction worksites and poses a great risk to workers. Follow these steps to ensure proper safety procedures are met when working with or around temporary power. ESFI BOAT AND MARINA ELECTRICAL SAFETY: ELECTRIC SHOCK Just like your home, it is critical that you have your boat inspected regularly by a licensed electrician and that you are familiar with the electrical system so you can identify and correct any potential hazards. Along with the safety of your boat's electrical system, it is critical for the safety of boat operators and swimmers to understand the hazard of electric shock drowning. ESFI: HOME ELECTRICAL SAFETY CHECKLIST The Home Electrical Safety Challenge provides a simple exercise to help you give your home an electrical safety “check-up.”. Each week during National Electrical Safety Month, use the Challenge worksheets in this section to take a look at a different area of your home. Learn to identify potential electrical hazards and correct them. ESFI: WORKPLACE SAFETY Between 2011 and 2018, 38% of all electrically related workplace fatalities were caused by overhead power lines. In the majority of these cases, fatalities occurred in occupations with little to no electrical safety training. So when you're on a job site, remember to always look up, always - ESFI: WHAT DOES A TAMPER RESISTANT RECEPTACLE (TRR) DO? Posted 02.05.2015 in Home Safety. Tamper resistant receptacles (TRRs) provide a simple, permanent solution for preventing common childhood shock and electrical burn injuries caused by tampering with a wall outlet. Unprotected outlets are a hazard for small children. Serious injuries result when common household objects are pushed into theslots.
