Fermentation. Fermentation is an anaerobic process that breaks down the glucose within organic materials. It is a series of chemical reactions that convert sugars to alcohol or acid. Yeast or bacteria are added to the biomass material, which feed on the sugars to produce ethanol and carbon dioxide. BIOMASS CHARACTERISTICS The chemical composition of plant biomass varies among species. Yet, in general terms, plants are made of approximately 25% lignin and 75% carbohydrates or sugars. The carbohydrate fraction consists of many sugar molecules linked together in long chains or polymers. Two categories are distinguished: cellulose and hemi-cellulose. BIOHEATING – EUROPEAN BIOMASS INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION Bioheating. Heating and cooling represents around 50% of the EU-28’s total energy consumption. The share of renewable energy sources in the heating and cooling sector (18,59%) increased slightly in 2015, with bioenergy representing 89% of the total contribution. BIO-BASED PRODUCTS
Standards are seen as essential elements in aggregating initial demand, in particular for new bio-based products. Standards for bio-based products can help to increase market transparency by providing common reference methods and requirements in order to verify claims about these products (e.g. bio-degradability, bio-based content, recyclability, sustainability).GASIFICATION
Gasification. Gasification is the conversion by partial oxidation (i.e. more oxidizing agent than for pyrolysis but less than for complete combustion) at elevated temperature of a carbonaceous feedstock such as biomass or coal into a gaseous energy carrier. Gasification takes place in two main stages.BIOFERTILIZERS

The pelleting of wood. Wood pellets are generally produced from the by-products of wood processing industries (such as wood shavings or sawdust) or from forest residues. BIOMASS PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES Biomass processing technologies. There are 6 generic biomass processing technologies based on: direct combustion (for power) anaerobic digestion (for methane-rich gas) fermentation (of sugars for alcohols) oil exaction (for biodiesel) pyrolysis (for biochar, gas and oils) gasification (for carbon monoxide and hydrogen-rich syngas). These

Biomass mostly derived from plants, that means as long as plants are going to be on this planet, biomass will be available asANAEROBIC DIGESTION

BIOFUELS – EUROPEAN BIOMASS INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION Biofuel: liquid fuel for transport produced from biomass, for example: biogasoline, biodiesel and other liquid biofuels Advanced biofuel: biofuel which is produced from materials such as algae, waste, residues, non-food cellulosic material and ligno-cellulosic material Conventional biofuel: biofuel which is produced from food or feed crops Biogasoline includes bioethanol, biomethanol, bioETBEGASIFICATION
Gasification. Gasification is the conversion by partial oxidation (i.e. more oxidizing agent than for pyrolysis but less than for complete combustion) at elevated temperature of a carbonaceous feedstock such as biomass or coal into a gaseous energy carrier. Gasification takes place in two main stages. ALGADISK – EUROPEAN BIOMASS INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION ALGADISK. Increasing the competitiveness of European non-energy algal sector by a novel solution for biomass production. ALGADISK is an action funded by the Research for the Benefit of SME scheme within the context of the 7th Framework Programme. The projec is focused on providing SMEs with a reactor for small scale algae prodution. Thusthe
ENERGY CROPS
Energy crops for liquid biofuels production. Rapeseed, sunflower or soybean are used for biodiesel production, and sugar cane, wheat or sweet sorghum for bioethanol production. Sweet sorghum is a particularly interesting and promising crop. Its main characteristicsare:

“2.3 trillion Euro turnover and 18.5 million employees in the European Bioeconomy in 2015 – Continuous increase of 10% since 2008” In 2016, a study conducted by nova-Institute on behalf of the Bio-based Industries Consortium showed for the first time which macroeconomic effects are generated by these activities, e.g. turnover, employment etc. for the years 2008 and 2013. ALGAE – EUROPEAN BIOMASS INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION The European algae production sector is mainly based in Norway, France, Ireland, Iceland and the Russian Federation, accounting together for around 98% of the total European biomass supply between 2006 and 2015. The production is dominated by Norway, supplying more than half (65%) of the total European macroalgal biomass production in2015.

The ratio is expressed in kg per capita. The underlying assumption is that, by and large, the only reasonable treatment of biowaste is composting or anaerobic digestion.ANAEROBIC DIGESTION
Anaerobic digestion (AD) means the bacterial breakdown of organic materials in the absence of oxygen. This biochemical process produces a gas, called biogas. AD drivers. The European Union has commited itself to an average reduction of GHG emissions of 20% by 2020 and 40% by 2030 relative to 1990. Biomass. Biomass is a term for organic matter derived from living, or recently living organisms. It is used as a source of energy in both commercial and domestic environments. The term biomass often refers to plants or plant-based materials which are not used for food or feed, such as wood, algae or bamboo. Biomass application: energy, such asBIOFERTILIZERS

Biofertilizers are defined as preparations containing living cells or latent cells of efficient strains of microorganisms that help crop plants’ uptake of nutrients by their interactions in the rhizosphere when applied through seed or soil.
