ORIGIN - WISCONSIN FAST PLANTS® Through his research addressing the diseases of cabbages in the state of Wisconsin, was born the idea of developing a rapid cycling plant (Fast Plants®) as a model for research with a wide range of biological and educational applications. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1978, was made a Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society GROW WISCONSIN FAST PLANTS Days 21-40. A day or two after planting and watering, the tiny seed germinates. During germination, the seed takes up water and swells until its seed coat cracks. The hypocotyl (stem) pushes through the soil, pulling the cotyledons (seed leaves) along with it. No longer needed, the seed coat drops from the cotyledons to the soil.GROW-FAST-PLANTS

AstroPlants AstroPlant variety of Wisconsin Fast Plants® was developed over the past 17 years through a long-term artificial selection plant-breeding program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. This variety was initially selected from a Petite variety population with a focus on selecting for a very specific criteria: 5 flowers at 15 days and less than 10cm tall. THREE MISTAKES TO AVOID FOR GROWING HEALTHY FAST PLANTS Better yet, measure your light output to see if plants are receiving 200-300 micromoles PAR at plant top level, and use your data to fine tune your lighting. In summary, special grow lights aren’t necessary, but high light intensity is a must! So, check your lighting system to be sure you have: INHERITANCE PATTERNS IN WISCONSIN FAST PLANTS GENETIC STOCKS Wisconsin Fast Plants are an ideal model organism for observing and learning about inheritance patterns! PRESERVICE TEACHERS ON THE FRONTLINE IN ENDING PLANT BLINDNESS Preservice teacher learners become effective teachers of science by developing strong content and content pedagogy knowledge that support all learners. In other words, the learning arc for preservice teacher learners is multilayered and jam-packed! So, it’s a tall order to hope that future teachers of science–elementary and secondary–are the solution to our national epidemic of plant blindness. “Plant blindness” may ...Read More

GROWING PLANTS INSPIRES A BOTANICAL PATH Growing plants inspires everything from a solid appreciation for plants to a lifelong passion. Equally important to inspiration, growing plants can be key to developing citizens literate about our dependence on plants for life. With this in mind, we share here Daniel Murphy’s firsthand account of his experiences growing plants and becoming–in his words–“a bona fide plant nerd.” Daniel publishes a weekly blog titled, Awkward Botany, sharing his...
