TUESDAY, 6 AUGUST 2019 HEROIN WORTH £40M SEIZED AT PORT OF FELIXSTOWEThe drugs were
taken from a ship heading to Antwerp Credit: NCA A massive haul of heroin has been found in a shipping container at the Port of Felixstowe. The drugs, worth a street value of around £40m, were hidden under towels and bathrobes when Border Force officers discovered them onAugust 1.
According to the National Crime Agency (NCA), the seizure is one of the largest ever made in the UK.An
international operation led authorities to the haul Credit: NCA Colin Williams, NCA regional Operations Manager, said: “The seizure of such a large quantity of heroin is the result of a targeted, intelligence-led investigation, carried out by the NCA with international and UK partners. “It is almost certain that some of these drugs would have been sold in the UK, fuelling violence and exploitation including what we see in county lines offending nationwide."The drugs have
an estimated street value of £40m. Credit: NCA After removing the drugs, authorities returned the container to the ship it came from and followed its journey to Antwerp in Belgium. It was then taken by road to Rotterdam, where Dutch Police arrested two people who tried to unload the container on August 5. At the same time, a man from Bromsgrove was arrested in the UK; he is currently being questioned. The wraps were
hidden under bedding and towels. Credit: NCA Mark Kennedy, Border Force Deputy Director, said: “Border Force officers operate on the front line, working every day to keep dangerous Class A drugs like this off the UK’s streets. “Substantial seizures like this help to keep communities safe and hit the organised crime groups involved in the international drugstrade hard.”

An international law enforcement investigation has resulted in one of the largest ever seizures of heroin in the UK.06 AUGUST 2019
An international law enforcement investigation has resulted in one of the largest ever seizures of heroin in the UK. NCA intelligence had identified a container vessel suspected of carrying a large drugs shipment en route to Antwerp, Belgium. The vessel docked in Felixstowe on 1st August. The following day, officers from Border Force and the NCA removed a container in which approximately 398 kilograms of heroin was concealed within a cover load of towels and bathrobes. The heroin was removed and the container returned to the vessel, which carried on to the port of Antwerp. On arrival, the container was collected by lorry and taken to Rotterdam – all the time under police surveillance. On 5 August, as suspects took steps to unload the contents, Dutch Police moved in and made two arrests. The NCA simultaneously arrested a man from Bromsgrove who is currently being questioned by NCA officers. The drugs would be worth at least £9m to organised criminals selling the whole consignment at wholesale, and at least £40m at street level in the UK and other European countries. NCA regional Operations Manager, Colin Williams, said: “The seizure of such a large quantity of heroin is the result of a targeted, intelligence-led investigation, carried out by the NCA with international and UK partners. “It is almost certain that some of these drugs would have been sold in the UK, fuelling violence and exploitation including what we see in county lines offending nationwide. “The heroin trade also feeds addictions that put users’ lives at risk, while giving rise to crime such as theft which make people feel unsafe in their communities. “The NCA works in the UK and with partners around the world to target the crime groups posing the greatest threat to the UK.” Mark Kennedy, Border Force Deputy Director, said: “Border Force officers operate on the front line, working every day to keep dangerous Class A drugs like this off the UK’s streets. “Substantial seizures like this help to keep communities safe and hit the organised crime groups involved in the international drugstrade hard.”

MAERSK FINED IN SPAIN AFTER LOCALS SPOT BOXSHIP BELCHING EXCESSIVEEMISSIONS
SAM CHAMBERS
Observant Spanish locals last week spotted a boxship belching out more smoke than normal, leading to a swift EUR20,000 ($22,435) fine for Maersk, the world’s largest container shipping company. The 2007-built, 6,478 teu Maersk Sembawang was caught as it came in to the port of Algericas, its excessive emissions blamed on a faultymain engine.
Nearby residents saw the huge plumes of black smoke coming from the ship and got in touch with a local environmental body who then alerted the port authorities./>

MONDAY, 5 AUGUST 2019 INTERNATIONAL UNIONS THROW SUPPORT BEHIND AUSTRALIAN WHARFIES AS DISPUTE WITH DP WORLD ESCALATES Maritime and transport unions from dozens of nations have thrown their support behind Australian wharfies fighting job losses, outsourcing, automation and threats to conditions at container terminals in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle. Unions representing millions of workers across the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America and the Pacific have written to Dubai-based port operator DP World highlighting the fact that the mistreatment of Australian dock workers is threatening positive industrial relations around the world. Pledges of solidarity and support, as well as the correspondence, makes clear that international unions won’t sit idly by while DP World carries out unilateral attacks on the workplace rights and conditions of Australian dock workers, and collectively calls on the company to return to the negotiating table. The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), which represents 18.5 million workers across the world, condemned DP World Australia’s actions. “Internationally, unions are alarmed by the actions of DP World Australia and have warned the company’s management in their ports all over the world that these attacks are threatening ongoing good industrial relations with their union and dockers unions worldwide,” ITF maritime coordinator, Jacqueline Smith. “The dispute has been repeatedly escalated by DP World, starting with an attack on income protection, then threats to outsource and automate jobs, and now a refusal to meet with the Maritime Union of Australia to open a dialogue about how job losses can be mitigated through rostering changes instead of forced redundancies. “ITF affiliates have made clear to DP World management that they strongly condemn any attempt to outsource jobs to lower-paid, non-union contractors at the expense of experienced dock workers, which can only be seen as a union-busting exercise,” said Smith. ITF Dockers’ Section vice-chair and International Longshore and Warehouse Union President William Adams also joined the condemnation of threats from DP World Australia’s management to outsource and automate operations in Australian terminals. “DP World’s threat to automate its Australian operations has been condemned internationally. Clauses that ensure workers are protected, retrained and reskilled following automation are a priority issue for dock workers’ globally. “This was highlighted during recent industrial disputes with the ILWU in Canada and the US that have resulted in mutually agreed settlements that set out worker protections and a negotiating process between the union and employers for automation. “Outsourcing and automation have significant impacts on productivity and profitability, as well as major social and community impacts on workers and their communities, which is why any attempt to water down union consultation requirements will be rejected by dockers unions around the globe. “Dockers internationally are uniting to take the fight to the doorstep of any employer threatening dockers jobs and working conditions, and right now DP World are in our sights,” said Adams. https://www.itfglobal.org/en/news/international-unions-throw-support-behind-australian-wharfies-dispute-dp-world-escalates Posted by Felixstowe Dockersat 17:30:00
