RED MARS REBELLION
A couple of years ago I read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy and it really made me want to play some kind of miniature game set in that kind of realistic near-future, where humans have colonized Mars and are attempting to slowly terraform it. The two main factions would be the military forces of Earth, tentatively named the Earth Sectorial Army, and the Mars Rebels, normally just referred REVIEW OF STAR WARS: EDGE OF THE EMPIRE BEGINNER FFG decided to do a big beta project to get input from the player community and although I didn't participate directly I read a lot about it and wrote down my thoughts on the game. From what it seemed Edge of the Empire would indeed be using a refined version of the WFRP3 system; refined meaning some changes in the rules but mainly the removal of the huge amount of tokens and cards EARTH DEFENCE FORCE FLEET FOR FIRESTORM: ARMADA I was leaning toward the Deisho from Cold Navy but then I came across some perfectly sized (ie bigger!) models of the ships from the old Japanese anime Space Battleship Yamato, aka Star Blazers, and I knew I had found my fleet! It took some time locating enough kits to make a fleet, but what I have now roughly equals two starter fleets plus a couple of carriers, so it should hopefully last meFIRE BROADSIDE!
Long time readers of Fire Broadside knows that I've been a fan of Dream Pod 9 in general and Jovian Chronicles in particular since nineties when the first (proper) edition of the roleplaying game was released. After getting the core book I managed to snag the Ships of the Fleet line of books that I read and re-read several times as the ship designs not only looked great, but were well thought BREAKING: CUBICLE 7 AQCUIRES WARHAMMER FANTASY ROLEPLAY! Don't reinvent the wheel, dont fix what aint broke. Not a fan of 3rd ed, 1st edition magic was the weakest link in the game but many of my favourite roleplaying experiences have been had with 1stJANUARY 2017
I'm jumping the gun a bit here, but it's all so exciting I simply can't help myself! Yesterday Grim and Perilous (makers of Zweihänder) reported that a large European publisher had got world wide distribution rights to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. I've covered a number of roleplaying games here in the past, but I don't think I've talked about any Swedish games. Not all that surprising seeing as this is an international blog after all, and it has been many years since I played a Swedish rpg (although I grew up on a healthy diet of them!).OCTOBER 2013
Next up was Elysium, which I did manage to see with a couple of friends. After Neil Blomkamps first movie, District 9, was such a cool piece of cinema I had quite high expectations.I'd heard that the reviews were lukewarm but I went into the movie theater undeterred! It's about the poor, filthy masses down on Earth in contrast with the super rich and beautiful who have taken refuge to a space ORIGINAL SPACE HULK TERMINATOR SQUAD DONE! During my painting sessions I kept thinking about how these minis were created. I mean they look quite different from the metal ones! At first I thought maybe these were some early prototype that was later refined when done in metal, but seeing as GW used metal minis on the back of the box and in the rulebook, as well as all the art that looks nothing like the plastic termies this was A FIRST LOOK AT DROPFLEET COMMANDER! So yeah, it's big. And now we finally know what a couple of other ships will look like, as well as the Avenger in fleet scale. At Salute Hawk Wargames brought some UCM models for the upcoming game and talked a lot more about the scope of theRED MARS REBELLION

New Angeles was a great surprise when it was announced, but a happy one for sure. I'm always eager to see more games using the interesting Android setting and one where you control the different corps and vying for power in New Angeles just seems awesome right off the bat!AUGUST 2016
We rounded up another couple of players and started the campaign a few days later. For the first session (covering the intro scenario and one side mission) they played with one hero each but for the second onward we decided to add Gideon to the heroes to make it a full party of four as that extra activation can have some weird effects on game balance.NOVEMBER 2015
I talked further with Zoltan Lečei, a Games Collective member and co-creator of the game, and sat down to read through the campaign and the quick start rules that are available and I am really impressed! The system used is heavily influenced by the original rules of White Wolf's World of Darkness roleplaying games although switched to a D6 base and modernized a bit.AUGUST 2013
Here's another little sidetrack that I managed to finish up. the IS-5 heavy tank! The Mao Zedong variant with its four 85mm anti-aircraft cannons is one of the most feared machines the SSU have, and rightlyso!

Recently I've been listening to the Reckless Dice podcast as they have played a few sessions of Mouse Guard and it reminded me again of how difficult some of the concepts of the game can be. Especially for players used to a more traditional roleplaying format. New Angeles was a great surprise when it was announced, but a happy one for sure. I'm always eager to see more games using the interesting Android setting and one where you control the different corps and vying for power in New Angeles just seems awesome right off the bat! FREE FALL AND STRANGE FLESH BOOK REVIEWS The gist of the story is that a politician connected to Humanity Labour (which is an anti-android organization) has been murdered in a very grisly fashion in a luxury hotel on the Beanstalk (the huge space elevator that the city of New Angeles has grown up around). Rick Harrison is sent to investigate but to keep it on the down low as it's a volatile situation. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE! For starters there is the upcoming WFRP3 campaign that we're kicking off that I'm thinking about doing a kind of ongoing journal here on Fire Broadside about. So far it's only in the planning stage, but we do have a dwarf slayer and a Sigmarite priest ready to go and the Game Master's Toolkit as well as the first campaign module should hit the stores right about the time I touch down in Stockholm. STAR WARS: IMPERIAL ASSAULT CAMPAIGN We rounded up another couple of players and started the campaign a few days later. For the first session (covering the intro scenario and one side mission) they played with one hero each but for the second onward we decided to add Gideon to the heroes to make it a full party of four as that extra activation can have some weird effects on game balance.
