BACTERIA BOOSTERS
Bacteria boosters or biological filter starters or enhancers are both unnecessary and can be damaging to the long-time stability of your aquarium. These bacteria boosters are supposedly colonies of bacteria that will get your tank cycled or increase your biological filter's capacity. But this is nearly always not the case. The bacteria you need in your biological filter needs two things to LEAK TESTING AN AQUARIUM Once you have the tank about 1/4 full, dry off the outside and let the tank sit for at least 24 hours. Return and check for any leaks. If the tank is leaking, then you will need to decide whether it is worth trying to repair the tank, or if you are better off just getting a new tank. If the tank is not leaking after 24 hours, then you should ROTATING DRUM FILTERS As the rotating drum collects debris and bacteria, the small openings in the fabric the drum is constructed of become clogged, and no longer allow water to pass through the filter, but instead just to pass over it or bounce off. This can greatly reduce the usable surface area of the filter, reducing the space available for Nitrifying bacteria REDUNDANT AQUARIUM FILTRATION Information on redundant aquarium filtration - using more than one aquarium filter on a fish tank - and the benefits of redundant filtration. If you have other questions, a convenient form will allow you to send questions to an experienced aquarist. WHEN IS THE CYCLE DONE? You can go at least two consecutive weeks with only once a week water changes with absolutely no signs of ammonia stress. If you are testing the water, your ammonia and nitrite tests have been 0 and both remained 0 for at least eight consecutive days. If you are testing the water, your nitrate test indicates that nitrate is rising in thewater.
USED AQUARIUMS
Fortunately, the answer is mostly simple. You just have to figure out which category your used aquarium fits into: The used tank that is still (or was just) set up and still has equipment - and may even come with fish. The tank that was just up and running, but no longer has all the equipment. The used tank that has been in disuse for an WHY IS MY WATER CLOUDY? Insufficient water changes can be a cause of cloudiness, as assorted debris collects in the water or the remnants of fish waste and uneaten fish food begin to float through the water. Insufficient water changes can also lead to algae or bacteria blooms that will make the water appear cloudy. You should perform a weekly 10-15% water change in TROUBLESHOOTING PH CHANGES IN YOUR FISH TANK If the pH is changing in your fish tank, or if the pH is different in the fish tank than it is from the tap (or other water source), you will want to try to figure out why this is happening.Once you have figured out why your aquarium's pH is changing, then you will want to correct the cause so that the change is eliminated. CALCULATING AQUARIUM VOLUME A handy calculator for calculating the volume of your fish tank. Use this calculator when working out the holding capacity of your fish tank. If you have other questions, a convenient form will allow you to send questions to an experienced aquarist. UPGRADING TO A LARGER AQUARIUM When setting up a new tank, I recommend setting up the tank and letting it run for at least a day to check that the tank does not leak, and that the equipment all works, and to get the temperature stabilized, then introducing the first fish to try to get the cycle going. New tank syndrome is a generic and all-encompasing explanation for loss of fish in an aquarium that is under two months old. There are really a wide number of things that these losses could be more accurately attributed to, but the fact that many new fish tank owners encounter these problems has resulted in getting them all lumpedtogether.
SAFETY CONCERNS WITH AN AQUARIUM Drowning. There is also a possibility of drowning. It really takes a very small amount of water to drown a person, and with an aquarium you have not only the fish tank which is full of water, but also the various buckets you are using which can pose a risk for drowning. FLUIDIZED BED FILTERS What Is a Fluidized Bed Filter? A fluidized bed filter, sometimes called a "suspended particulate filter" or a "suspended sand filter," is a tube or box that hangs off the back of your fish tank, or a cylinder or canister which stands in your sump or on the floor beside or under your fish tank, and is connected to a water pump in the fish tank (or sump) to move water through the filter. ULTRAVIOLET STERILIZERS Ultraviolet sterilizers require three things. First, the pump must be in good order, so you will have to keep your pump clean. Second, the crystal sleeve needs to remain clear and free of debris, so you will have to clean it regularly (every 3-15 months, depending on feeding and cleaning habits, type and population of fish, type of filter used THE INFAMOUS BETTA VASE Information on the Betta Vase - a very bad, cruel, unsuitable, and unhealthy environment for a Betta. These are my guidelines for getting started with fish and aquariums , moving with your fish and aquarium , or upgrading to a larger aquarium . The information provided here is intended to help beginning aquariists get their tanks up an running smoothly , and to provide a reference for those who are in the process of upgrading their tank or looking for information on various pieces of aquarium equipment . I hope that you will find the information available here to be useful as you are getting ready to set up your aquarium or actually setting up your aquarium , and that you return to the site to get more information as you venture further into your aquarium keeping adventure and need greater information on fish keeping and relevantequipment .
Much of the information available here is derived from my opinions and experiences based on over two decades of raising tropical fish, maintaining my own tanks, helping friends to get their own aquaria started, extensive reading of literature available regarding the aquarium hobby and industry, and, more recently, running the fish department at Bozeman Pet Center. I have also incorporated information based on feedback I have gotten from others who may have more experience with specific equipment and information based on some of the most frequently asked questions I get. I have also included some information on why people often get conflicting information from various sources on fish care. This site includes a list of parts and equipment and their purpose, use, and maintenance as well as how to set up and cycle your new tank and introduce new fish, as well as information on aquarium capacity and population . I have a form set up for you to send me questions about your aquarium setup in case the answers are not published here yet and a tank volume calculator if you're trying to figure out your tank volume. I have also added a page about my qualifications for providing this information. Information is also available on cleaning the tank and the cruelty involved in painting and dying fish for retail sale, as well as some information on some interesting fish I often get questions about, and some information on chemistry and pH . Of course, if you are just getting started , I suggest you begin here.
