Blue Run of Dunnellon Park. From downtown Dunnellon at US 41 and CR 484, drive east and cross the Rainbow River. The parking area is immediately on the right after the bridge. If it is full, continue to San Jose Blvd on the right. Turn right and look for the park entrance and alternate trailhead on the right. BIKING EAST CENTRAL REGIONAL RAIL TRAIL Edgewater ( 28.986273, -80.921663 ) 36.2 miles. Following a historic railroad corridor through southern Volusia County, the 36.2-mile East Central Regional Rail Trail (ECRRT) links together communities built along the railroad. These include Enterprise, Osteen, Maytown, and Edgewater. The region was stripped of its old growth forests more than BLACK HAMMOCK WILDERNESS AREA KAYAKING THE WEEKI WACHEE RIVER Paddling the Weeki Wachee River. One of Florida’s most beautiful paddling trips, the Weeki Wachee River rises from first magnitude Weeki Wachee Springs and winds through lush floodplain forests as it is fed by hundreds of smaller springs along this 5.5-mile paddlingrun.

Some of these forests have multiple campgrounds in different locations. All Florida State Forest reservations are handled by Reserve America, 1-800-456-2267. HIKING SEMINOLE STATE FOREST With nearly 50 miles of trails and roads for hiking, biking, and equestrian use, Seminole State Forest offers surprising panoramas and backpacking near Orlando. PRIMITIVE CAMPING IN FLORIDA Primitive campsites in Florida State Parks are primarily along trails built and maintained by the Florida Trail Association. Most state parks charge a nominal fee per person, between $1 and $5 per night, to camp in the backcountry. Some of the more popular primitive camping FISHHAWK CREEK PRESERVE Fishhawk Creek Preserve protects a variety of natural ecosystems along the Alafia River and its namesake creek, a tributary of the river. Divided into two halves, Fishhawk Creek North is adjacent to LithiaSprings Park.

The Audubon Guide to North American Birds is a great help in pinpointing specific features of a bird you’ve seen. It includes an excellent database of images showing young, juvenile, immature, and color morphs of species, as well as sound clips. Audubon Guide. LAKE OKEECHOBEE SCENIC TRAIL First hiked in the 1960s and developed as a loop in the Florida National Scenic Trail in the 1980s, the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail offers spectacular views from the top of the 35-foot-tall Herbert Hoover Dike, built for flood control between the 1930s and 1960s. Sunrises and sunsets are especially gorgeous across the marshes andopen waters.
WEEKIWACHEE PRESERVE Hernando Beach ( 28.495747,-82.648786 ) 5.9 miles. Named for the river which defines its northern boundary, the 11,000-acre Weekiwachee Preserve protects a mosasic of habitats. Along with adjoining public lands, these form the largest remaining Florida black bear habitat along the peninsular Gulf Coast. The preserve is centered around amine
