It’s what most people think of recalling the era when Foynes flourished as the hub of aviation activity between North America and Europe. One of the largest aircraft of the time, 12 were built for Pan American World Airways, three of which were sold to BOAC in 1941 before delivery. A BRIEF TIMELINE HISTORY OF MANNED FLIGHT 1903: The Wright brothers make the first manned, powered, controlled flight. 1919: the NC4 is the first plane to cross the Atlantic Ocean. 1927: Charles Lindbergh completes the first solo, nonstop transatlantic flight in The Spirit of St. Louis, traveling from New York to Paris, France.MAUREEN O’HARA
THE AUTHENTIC FOYNES IRISH COFFEE RECIPE Step One: Preheat your Foynes Irish coffee glass by filling it with boiling water for 5 seconds, then pour the water out. Step Two: Add 1 teaspoon of brown sugar and a good measure of Irish whiskey into the warmed glass. Step Three: Fill the glass to within 1 cm of the brim with hot, strong black coffee. Stir well to dissolve all the brownsugar.

LEARN THE HISTORY OF NORTH ATLANTIC AVIATION AT FOYNES Explore the life and legacy of legendary Irish-American actress Maureen O'Hara. The exhibit is dedicated to this Hollywood icon, who starred in several classic films from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Her husband, famed aviator Charles Blair, flew flying boats into Foynes from 1942 to 1945. Maureen officially opened our museum on 8th July1989

FOYNES MARITIME MUSEUM Maritime Museum. The River Shannon— Abhainn na Sionainne in Gaelic—is Ireland’s longest river. Named for the Celtic river goddess Sionna, it’s important in Irish mythology. The waterway has also benefitted a number of civilizations back to antiquity, and was crucial in establishing Foynes as an international port. DIRECTIONS TO FOYNES FLYING BOAT AND MARITIME MUSEUM Unfortunately, flying boats no longer fly into Foynes. However, Shannon International Airport is nearby. A GLIMPSE OF THE DAILY OPERATIONS AT FOYNES AIRPORT A Glimpse of the Daily Operations at Foynes Airport (Shannon Airport) Here’s a representative look at the day-to-day operations of Foynes Airport, or Shannon Airport as it was known at the time, during the flying boat era of 1939 to 1945. We selected the first three weeks of September 1943, during a peak summer period, and set out an extract MEET CHEF JOE SHERIDAN, INVENTOR OF IRISH COFFEE Meet Chef Joe Sheridan, Inventor of Irish Coffee. Joe Sheridan was born in 1909 in Castlederg, County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. One of six sons, his family moved to Dublin after the death of his father, where he worked in a restaurant. In 1943, he applied for the job of chef at the airport in Foynes.
