Over the last 50 years, America has built roads and bridges at a pace and scale that dwarfs most of the rest of the world. Now, much of that system is showing its age – and as maintenance needs continue to grow, we are falling farther behind. Across the nation, drivers face more than 150,000 miles of roads in less than good condition and more than 70,000 decaying bridges. SICK ECOSYSTEMS LEAD TO SICK PEOPLE: HOW DEFORESTATION IS COVID-19 has shown us that the destruction of our forests and the ecosystems they support comes at a heavy price. If we continue to ignore the science warning of the lethal consequences of deforestation, then we should brace ourselves for future pandemics, potentially much more devastating than this one. THE COSTS OF FRACKING The negative environmental and health impacts of fracking for oil and gas come with heavy “dollars and cents” costs, ranging from cleaning up contaminated water to repairing ruined roads. The experience of previous fossil fuel booms suggests that many of these costs will wind up being borne by the public. The Costs of Fracking highlights the many ways in which oil and gas production using DEBUNKING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION MYTHS The American Public Transportation Association says the long-term trend is clear: Ridership on the nation's buses, subways, commuter rail lines and other transit systems grew 34% in 1995-2009, outpacing 23% growth in the number of vehicle miles driven on highways in that period. The number of workers who rely on transit regularly grew by a HOW MANY U.S. NUCLEAR PLANTS ARE LOCATED NEAR EARTHQUAKE The unfolding events in Japan are a sobering reminder that nuclear power is a dangerous technology. New technologies and emerging social trends, from the resurgence of interest in SICK ECOSYSTEMS LEAD TO SICK PEOPLE: HOW DEFORESTATION IS COVID-19 has shown us that the destruction of our forests and the ecosystems they support comes at a heavy price. If we continue to ignore the science warning of the lethal consequences of deforestation, then we should brace ourselves for future pandemics, potentially much more devastating than this one.ROAD WORK AHEAD
THE HIGH COST OF FOSSIL FUELS America’s dependence on fossil fuels is costly – both in terms of up-front costs and in the negative economic and environmental side-effects of fossil fuel use. Fossil fuels cost the United States billions of dollars each year, and nationwide spending could total as much as $30 trillion between 2010 and 2030. Secondary impacts from our fossil fuel use, such as global warming, air pollution HIGH-SPEED RAIL: PUBLIC, PRIVATE OR BOTH? Private sector companies are likely to play a major role in the construction of high-speed rail lines in the United States. Yet, the experience with "public-private partnerships" (PPPs) in the construction of high-speed rail lines abroad has been mixed. High-Speed Rail: Public, Private or Both? discusses the pros and cons of high-speed rail PPPs, reviews the experiences abroad, and lays outa

The U.S. produces immense amounts of trash. Currently, we extract natural resources to make products that we buy, use – usually briefly – and ultimately throw out. FRONTIER GROUP AT 25: TRANSPORTATION FOR A NEW GENERATION Acknowledging that vehicle travel is not destined to continue growing rapidly forever – and, more audaciously, suggesting that a new generation of Americans might prefer less car-dominated lives – can drive policymakers and the public to have a different JUNE NEWSLETTER: THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD MOVES: NOT WITH Burning fossil fuels in order to move around is both dangerous and destructive. It also set the stage for a clean energy revolution in California. 50 STEPS TOWARD CARBON-FREE TRANSPORTATION America’s transportation system has emerged as Climate Enemy #1, with cars, trucks and other vehicles now representing the nation’s largest source of carbon pollution, and America producing more transportation carbon pollution per capita than any other major industrialized nation. America’s transportation system produces more greenhouse gas emissions than any other sector of our economy and, on its own, is responsible for 4 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions – more than the entire economies of France and the United Kingdom combined.
