EMANCIPATING OURSELVES FROM MENTAL ENSLAVEMENT Saturday June 19 is Juneteenth, celebrated by many as the end of slavery in the United States. The Garrison Institute is observing it with a daylong virtual meditation retreat for the Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) community. It’s designed for anyone who self-identifies as Black, LatinX, indigenous, of Asian descent, or as part of any other community of VIRTUAL RETREAT: THE KEY TO RECOVERY AND BUDDHIST PRACTICE A Virtual Retreat with Dr. Valerie Mason-John (Vimalasara) and Kevin Griffin. In this half-day retreat we will explore meditation practices and insights that help us to let go of our addictions and their underlying causes. There will be guidance in mindfulness and loving-kindness meditation as well as teachings on Right View, Right Intention and Right Effort, path factors central to letting go. Our Story So Far. Since its inception in 2003, the Garrison Institute has flourished under the influence of its unique geography and storied history. Siegel, M.D. In your journey to understanding what it means to be human on this planet at this time, it can become quite overwhelming to think of the many ways of comprehending the nature of reality. THE INSIGHT OF INTERBEING The verb “to be” can be misleading, because we cannot be by ourselves, alone. “To be” is always to “inter-be.”. If we combine the prefix “inter” with the verb “to be,” we have a new verb, “inter-be.”. To inter-be and the action of interbeing reflects reality more accurately. As a Black female who had just finished grad school, I was all too aware of potential negative stereotypes that others might have about me based on my age, gender, and race. Our Story So Far. Since its inception in 2003, the Garrison Institute has flourished under the influence of its unique geography and storied history. The Garrison Institute was founded by Diana and Jonathan Rose and colleagues in a former Capuchin Monastery in Garrison, New York, an hour north of New York City in the Hudson River Valley. DR.
