Just before the citywide lockdown, my girlfriend Liana and I feasted at Chad Colby’s Antico . Our meal began with a parade of nibbles — from anchovies on toast to runny ricotta cheese and grilled delicata squash — followed by fetching pastas, meat, fish, and ice creams. I waddled out of the restaurant eager to do it all over again soon. In the weeks that followed, however, the coronavirus struck and plans for return visits had to be postponed. Fortunately, the team at Antico pivoted in brilliant fashion as the city locked down, converting into a focaccia pizza and ice cream operation seemingly overnight. After weeks of pining for a taste, The Astronomer, June, and I made the trek to Antico on a Sunday afternoon. We placed our order and paid over the phone, and brought the two pizzas and two pints of ice creamhome to eat.

I have roasted three chickens since lockdown began five weeks ago, which is exactly three more than I had ever roasted in my life. My go-to recipe is the one on Simply Recipesthat
calls for roasting an olive-oil slicked bird on a bed of carrots and potatoes after stuffing its cavity with fresh rosemary and a halvedlemon.

My unanticipated last supper before sheltering in place was a pop-upat The Hoxton
starring St. John , the legendary London restaurant. In the days following the event, LA’s mayor cautioned against dining inside restaurants before shutting down dining rooms across the city altogether. I don’t know when normalcy will return, but as far as final feasts go, this was one for thebooks.
Hosted by Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver, the five-course dinner featured dishes from their newly released _The Book of St. John_ . Before sitting down to sup, we snacked on deep-fried calves’ brains paired with an intensely garlicky aioli and sipped a Fergroni (a.k.a. Negroni as it should be). I had the distinct pleasure of dining at St. John in 2012and remember
the roast bone marrow with parsley salad fondly. It was wonderful to be reunited with this iconic dish on my home turf.(more…)
