History in the Making at The Girls Club. For 25 years, the Girls Club has been committed to advancing social justice and racial equity. Our programs and initiatives have exposed members to historical civil rights activists and the leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement today. We celebrate radical read more →. GIRLS CLUB COVID-19 RESPONSE AND RESOURCES The Girls Club is a parallel family, a lifeline, a place where girls grow physically, mentally and emotionally, and they need us now more than ever. In response to COVID-19, we are: Providing short-term cash infusions for non-food necessities. Providing homemade masks and cleaning supplies. Sourcing produce from local organic farms, and PROGRAMS | THE LOWER EASTSIDE GIRLS CLUB OF NY The Lower Eastside Girls Club connects girls and young women to healthy and successful futures. Our state-of-the-art center offers a safe haven with programs in the arts, sciences, leadership, entrepreneurship, and wellness for middle and high school girls. OUR STORY | THE LOWER EASTSIDE GIRLS CLUB OF NY History. The Lower Eastside Girls Club was founded in 1996 to address the historic lack of services available to girls and young women on the Lower East Side. The effects of inner-city social turmoil which took place in the 1960’s and 70’s throughout the nation hit THE GIRLS CLUB ALLIANCE The Girls Club Alliance is our Junior Board of volunteers who support the Girls Club through mentorship opportunities and fundraising. Junior Board members are a crucial component in providing free and fabulous programs to girls from low-income families. If you believe in what we do, have ideas and talents to share, and love to fun draise,this
STAFF | THE LOWER EASTSIDE GIRLS CLUB OF NY Currently, 7 Girls Club alumni, as well as 3 mothers of our members, work at the Girls Club; 75% of staff are people of color. Our Executive leadership team, with Ebonie Simpson and Jenny Dembrow at the helm, is BIPOC led. In FY 2020 we had 150 volunteers connect with the Girls Club through various workshops and events (in-person andvirtual).
THE LOWER EASTSIDE GIRLS CLUB LAUNCHES ITS CENTER FOR “Arup is delighted to partner with SOM to provide pro bono acoustic and audiovisual design services for the Center for Wellbeing and Happiness,” said Helen Searle, Senior Consultant, Arup.She added, “The high caliber creative output from the Girls Club is a great inspiration for us in the design of this state of the art facility. THE LOWER EASTSIDE GIRLS CLUB OF NY The Lower Eastside Girls Club has been “Opening Doors, Empowering Women, and Building Community Girl by Girl” since 1996. Today we operate a full-service arts, science and civic engagement Center for Community on Avenue D adjacent to the low-income NYCHA housing projects. The centerpiece of the installation is LESGC Board Member/mentor/artist Kevin McHugh’sDisco
HEALTHY BODIES, HEALTHY MINDS Environmental Education. Girls Club members participate in an array of environmental education and community health activities. Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds. La Tiendita, the entrepreneurial training program of The Lower Eastside Girls Club, trains and employs high school girls, college students and Lower EastSide mothers.
