THE ISLAND WITH THE TOWER COURTESY OF THE GREENWICH LAND TRUST. The Eimers lived in New York City – in the same building as Babe Ruth – and came out to Byram around June. They had a bungalow built on shore, which angered the neighbors. It was a pre-fab from Sears and Roebuck, which clashed with other houses in the area.When it was warm enough, a captain would take them out to the island in a rowboat. In February 1961, George Weiss – Greenwich resident and a former General Manager of the Yankees – called stockbroker M. Donald Grant, who also lived here. Weiss wanted Grant to organize a new team called the Meadowlarks (predecessor of the Mets). Grant would run the organization as Team President from1962
MIANUS RIVER AND NATURAL PARK Greenwich is very fortunate to have a number of beautiful parks available to its residents. One of these parcels is the Mianus River and Natural Park located in northern Cos Cob just off Cognewaugh Road, 3/4 of a mile south of the Merritt Parkway. It’s part of the larger Mianus Greenway, and crosses over the town line into Stamford. PERROT MEMORIAL LIBRARY Located in Old Greenwich, Perrot Memorial Library is named for John Perrot, a British loyalty and Old Greenwich’s first private schoolmaster. The Library was founded by his descendants in 1903, and moved around until 1930 when architect D. Everett Waid donated a piece of land on Sound Beach Avenue, and plans for a library building. HAVEMEYER PARK HOUSING PROJECT Havemeyer Park Housing Project. One of the most interesting neighborhoods in town is Havemeyer Park in Old Greenwich . It lies just to the west of the town line with Stamford, and offers a contrast to the housing projects and new condos just across the town line. AMERICA’S SECOND WAR OF INDEPENDENCE United States Enters War of 1812. After years of interference, The United States finally declared war on Britain in June 1812. Between June and August of 1812, there were riots in Baltimore over conscription. In July 1812, the first of three attempts were made to invade Canada – home base for the British. American forces wereturned back.
THE BUSH FAMILY PATRIARCH He was a member of the Yale Club, the Round Hill Country Club, and the Field Club. Prescott Bush died on October 8, 1972, in New York City. He was interred at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich. Bush lived a very successful and prosperous life. His contributions to business and politics were immense.
