GROWING VEGETABLES IN CONTAINERS, ORGANIC CONTAINER GARDENING Moderating Temperature. Watering is by far the biggest concern when growing vegetables in containers. Container vegetable gardens have limited root zones, so they need frequent watering—sometimes twice a day in hot weather, or on balconies exposed to lots of sun or drying winds. Automatic drip irrigation systems are the best solution for CONTAINER GARDEN TEMPERATURE, MODERATING TEMPERATURE IN Temperature. Container garden temperature can be a big issue on balcony farms. Containers are extreme environments for plants. Daytime temperatures are hotter, and nighttime temperatures are colder than temperatures for plants grown in the ground, because the surrounding soil moderates temperature extremes. It takes longer for soil to warmup

Light colors reflect light, and dark colors absorb it, so if your CHANGING SOIL PH, SOIL PH ADJUSTMENT, LOWERING SOIL PH The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14. It’s a logarithmic scale, like the Richter scale to measure earthquakes. A soil with a pH of 6 is ten times more acidic than a soil with a pH of 7. Neutral pH is 7.0. A soil with a pH lower than 7 is an acidic soil. A soil with pH higher than 7 is an alkaline soil. HOW TO GROW VEGETABLES WITHOUT TOXIC CHEMICALS, GROWING Pesticide residues. Most backyard gardeners would rather not deal with toxic chemicals, if they have an alternative. ALPHABETICAL LIST OF VEGETABLES, VEGETABLE VARIETIES If you’re growing vegetables in a short-summer, alpine, or cool-summer garden, you’ll have better luck growing “early” varieties that flower and set fruit sooner, and at lower temperatures, than mid-season and late varieties.. In long-summer areas, mixing early, mid-season, and late-season varieties spreads the harvest over the whole season, giving you a continuous supply of that ORGANIC POTASH SOURCES, ORGANIC POTASSIUM SOURCES, ORGANIC Greensand, kelp meal, and hardwood ashes are all good organic potassium sources. GROWING TOMATOES, HOW TO GROW TOMATOES, PLANTING TOMATOES Back in the 80’s when I started growing tomatoes organically, the only way to get good tomatoes was to grow your own. Now you can get good tomatoes in season at farmers markets and high-end supermarkets, but they still don’t come close to tomatoes you can grow in your back yard, if you know how to grow tomatoes. CONTAINER GARDEN TEMPERATURE, MODERATING TEMPERATURE IN Temperature.
GROWING BASIL IN CONTAINERS Fabric Smart Pots are great for growing basil in containers. They're light-weight, and produce a healthy, more fibrous root system on the plants. Choose the 3 or 4-gallon size. Ceramic pots hold the day’s heat longer, and are the best choice for growing basil in northern and short-season alpine climates. Basil thrives in window boxes, because TOMATO VARIETIES, TYPES OF TOMATOES, HEIRLOOM TOMATOES 'Enchantment' (F1 hybrid, Indeterminate, 72 days, resistant to verticilium and fusarium wilts 1 and 2, nematodes, and tobacco mosaic virus) is a 3” (7.5cm), oval salad tomato that grows in fat clusters spiraling around the vine. One of the most versatile tomatoes you can grow, it has great flavor, but is not so juicy that you can’t make a quick sauce without having to cook off a lot of water. CHOOSING CONTAINERS FOR CONTAINER GARDENING A rule of thumb for choosing containers for container gardening: Square, rectangular, or cylindrical containers need less frequent watering than tapered pots. Tapered pots have more soil at the top of the pot, where it dries out quickly. Square, rectangular, or cylindrical containers have more soil volume in the lower half of thecontainer
TOMATO DISEASES,
Unfortunately, I don't have good photos of tomato diseases, other than Western Yellows. As both a gardener and a photographer, I don't do ugly very well, and diseased tomato plants are ugly.. I've had problems with fusarium wilt, verticilium wilt, and late blight in the past, but brown is the color of failure in the garden, so I didn'ttake pictures.

ORGANIC GARDENING EXPLAINED, HOW TO GROW-IT-ORGANICALLY Organic gardening isn't rocket science. The basic principles–feeding the soil to feed the plants, using plant vigor and the local ecosystem to fight off pests–have been around for centuries.Science has made refinements, but the core ideas are unchanged. I've been growing food organically for over 30 years. HOW TO GROW VEGETABLES WITHOUT TOXIC CHEMICALS, GROWING Pesticide residues. Most backyard gardeners would rather not deal with toxic chemicals, if they have an alternative. Automatic drip irrigation systems are the best solution for ORGANIC CALCIUM SOURCES, ORGANIC CALCIUM FOR GARDENS Dried, ground eggshells are a great source of calcium for vegetable container gardens and salad tables.. Calcium is a component of plant cell walls, and it’s needed for enzyme formation and nitrate uptake. Organic calcium can also be used to help neutralize excessively acidic soils, which is especially important when you’re growing green, leafy vegetables like lettuce and spinach, or TOMATO VARIETIES, TYPES OF TOMATOES, HEIRLOOM TOMATOES 'Enchantment' (F1 hybrid, Indeterminate, 72 days, resistant to verticilium and fusarium wilts 1 and 2, nematodes, and tobacco mosaic virus) is a 3” (7.5cm), oval salad tomato that grows in fat clusters spiraling around the vine. ZUCCHINI VARIETIES AND TYPES OF ZUCCHINI Fruit Type is usually the first consideration for gardeners thinking about which zucchini varieties to try, but vine size is also important, especially for small space or container gardeners.. TOP TEN GARDENING MISTAKES: MISTAKE 7, INCORRECT WATERING 7.) Incorrect Watering. 9.) Not Mulching. 10.) Ignoring Pollinators. Once the plants are established, drip systems are great, but they do nothing if the roots haven’t reached the cone of moist soil under each line. Overwatering, especially in cool, cloudy weather, can promote root rots and fungal diseases. CHANGING SOIL PH, SOIL PH ADJUSTMENT, LOWERING SOIL PH The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14. A soil with a pH lower than 7 is an acidic soil. A soil with pH higher than 7 is an alkaline soil. HARVESTING CARROTS, WHEN TO HARVEST CARROTS The growth rate is slower in cooler temperatures, faster in the warmest summer months. When the carrot tops are 4-6” (10-15cm) high, you can start harvesting “baby” carrots. This is around the time you'll want to thin them to their final spacing–about 3" (7cm)–so the remaining carrots can size up properly. The carrots should be 3-4CLOSE X

The basic principles–_FEEDING THE SOIL TO FEED THE PLANTS, USING PLANT VIGOR AND THE LOCAL ECOSYSTEM TO FIGHT OFF PESTS_–have been around for centuries. Science has made refinements, but the core ideas areunchanged.
I've been growing food organically for over 30 years. Most of the photos on this site were taken in our garden or gardens planted for clients. Some photos on the VEGETABLE VARIETIES pages are from our seed source affiliate, Seeds Now, and other seed companies we use and recommend. Vegetables fall into 5 main plant families. If you're adept at growing tomatoes, you know something about growing peppers, chiles, and eggplants, because they're in the same family and share similar soil, water, and fertilizer needs, as well as some common pests anddiseases.
HOW TO GROW VEGETABLES introduces vegetable plant families, and the shared needs and problems of similar crops. FALL VEGETABLESdescribes
the differences between cool-season and summer vegetables. If you’re a locavore looking for ways to reduce your carbon footprint, _YOU CAN’T GET ANY MORE LOCAL THAN YOUR OWN BALCONY, DECK, OR BACK YARD._ Even if you live in an apartment highrise, with all the options for GROWING VEGETABLES IN CONTAINERS,
balcony farmers and container gardeners can grow some of their own vegetables on a small deck or terrace. Beginning gardeners can avoid a lot of wasted time and effort by going to STARTING A VEGETABLE GARDEN,

ORGANIC GARDENING IS BASED ON ECOLOGY, NOT CHEMISTRY ORGANIC GARDENING MIMICS—AND AMPLIFIES—NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS. Instead of bathing your vegetables in chemical fertilizers, organic gardeners "feed the soil to feed the plants", adding organic matter to the soil and relying on the SOIL FOOD WEBto release
nutrients to vegetables. Instead of spraying poisons to control pests, organic gardening relies on plant vigor and NATURAL GARDEN PESTCONTROL
to keep insect pests in check. _THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH USING CHEMICALS IN THE GARDEN IS THIS: CHEMICALS SIMPLIFY ECOSYSTEMS._ Use a nitrate salt fertilizer or an herbicide, and kiss the beneficial fungi (the ones that help control pathogens) in your soil goodbye. Earthworm populations dive—literally—as they head for the subsoil or out of the garden.CLICK TO ENLARGE
