GROWING COMMUNITIES
This is Growing Communities. We're building a better food system that's fair to farmers, kind to the planet and great for all of us. For over 20 years, we have harnessed the buying power and skills of our community to reshape the food and farming systems that feed us, providing people with an ethically driven alternative to the current damaging food system.FARMERS' MARKET
Raw milk, butter, cheeses, yogurt, cream, eggs and meat from sustainable family farms. Fresh fish sustainably caught in the English Channel. Hand-made breads, cakes and chocolates. Fermented foods, kombucha, pickles and hemp products. Lovely organic veg from Kent, Essex and Cambridgeshire, salad leaves, seasonal fruit and exoticmushrooms.
THE FOOD ZONES
People are reconnected with farming; involved with the production, trading and celebration of food. There is already lots going on in each of the zones. Growing Commmunities is producing food in zones 1 and 2, while working with farmers and coops further afield. And there is an inspiring array of values-based, short-chain supply schemesFOOD GROWING
All our growing space is certified by the Soil Association - ours was the first organically certified food-growing land in London. In Hackney, we specialise in salad leaves. In Dagenham, we grow a far greater range of produce. Both farms also train new growers. If you're interested in sourcing local organic food for your supper club orother
OUR PRODUCERS
The Bath Soft Cheese Company now makes a range of organic, pasteurised cheeses that have won awards up and down the country. They sell their Bath Soft, Bath Blue and Wyfe of Bath, a hard cheese, at the market. Farmers' market: weekly. Park Farm, Kelston ,Bath BA1 9AG 01225331601.

We have closed the waiting list for volunteering in Hackney, as we have more willign hands than we are able to cope with! We are also closed for volunteering in Dagenham, but hope to restart our volunteering programme there later in theyear.
PURPLE SPROUTING BROCCOLI SOUP Method. Wash the broccoli and cut into roughly 1cm pieces. Peel the potatoes and cube. Chop the onion. Put the butter or oil into a saucepan and heat. Add all the veg and give them a good stir for a minute. Cover with boiling water and add the stock cube PEAR NECESSITIES: WILDING AN ORCHARD The original pear orchard is managed separately from the rest of the trees. There are 1600 pear trees, which we realised we couldn’t manage without lots of machinery. So we found a local organic farmer called Paul Ward of Mole End Farm and leased three-quarters of the pear orchard to him.DAGENHAM FARM
Dagenham Farm shows the potential for growing - and selling - significant amounts of produce from farms on the outskirts of London and other cities. The farm's development was originally funded by the Local Food Fund, part of the Big Lottery, from March 2012 to March 2014, when it also became fully certified as organic.GROWING COMMUNITIES

VEGETABLE COBBLER
Pre-heat the oven to 180C. Heat the oil in a large saucepan, add the onions and garlic and cook over a low heat until softened (about 5 to 10 minutes). Add the rest of the veg, and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the tomatoes, veg stock and lentils. Mix inthe oregano.
HOW BUYING THROUGH GC IS BETTER FOR YOU AND YOUR PLANET Local food retailers who sell food from climate-friendly farmers generate a huge amount of value for the people that eat the food, grow the food and the environment, finds a report from the New Economics Foundation and Soil Association. For every £1 spent buying organic food through Growing Communities, almost £3 more is generated in benefits to customers, farmers, citizens CREATING LIVELIHOODS FOR SMALL FARMS Creating livelihoods for small farms. We're using the term “farmer-focused” a lot these days to explain our approach to running our veg scheme and farmers' market. It's about looking at what our land and soils can produce and basing the offer to our customers around that – the result being an emphasis on seasonal, local andorganic.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SEED VARIETY The importance of seed variety. Local growers are struggling to protect their own local seed varieties as big corporations use their power and influence to patent GMOs. Plants grown from different seed varieties often adapt to local conditions in ways that can help them to deal with mass floods, drought, high temperatures and soilsalinity.
LEBANESE TABBOULEH
The only taboo about this easy Mediterranean salad is not having tried it yet! Tabbouleh is concentrated in the flavoured herb parsley, with mint, a mix of other finely chopped vegetables and bulgur wheat. I grew up eating this often having a Lebanese mother, moving away from home I craved it more especially during homesick episodes. Although it is becoming more mainstream,GROWING COMMUNITIES
