Mathematics and Physics majors, Emerson Scholarship, Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia; Grew up in Windsor, Canada “Hartwick provides many fantastic opportunities. Each student is treated as a unique individual. Professors are ready to help and support every student that is looking to succeed. Students are given attention and that chance to improve.”×
YURY'S STORY
“This summer I will be travelling to Cologne, Germany for a month to do research studying high-resolution infrared spectroscopy of carbon sulfur clusters (paid for by an Emerson Scholarship). I am very excited and tremendously grateful for this opportunity to grow in my career as a scientist and at the same time see the world!”Close Yury's Story

LISLE DALTON, PH.D.
Associate Professor of Religious Studies What happens when you mix a seminar on the American food system, the ethics of eating, and First Year Honors students? Plus some field trips and cooking? The Honors First Year Seminar, “Foodways, Faithand Fairness.”
×
PROFESSOR DALTON'S STORY “This course will ask students to think seriously about food– How is it produced? How is it distributed? How is it cooked and shared? What symbolic meanings does it hold? How do communities build a shared vision of “the Good” around the things they eat? To explore these questions, we will focus on a variety of communities and their “foodways” – that is, their particular strategies for producing, regulating, cooking, and sharing food. We will explore general structures of the American food system and voices that seek to challenge and reform that system on ethical grounds. Finally, to fully engage with our subject matter, we will spend some of our class sessions on field trips to local food producers, and in the kitchen, putting our foodways theory into edible practice.” Close Professor Dalton's Story Read Professor Dalton's StoryTAYLOR ASHTON ’18
Major: Sociology
Hometown: Earlville, New York Victims Advocacy & Prevention Education, Opportunities for Otsego “Going to Hartwick opened up opportunities for me in life that I otherwise never could have had. I was awarded the Samuel J. and Angeline Lambros Bertuzzi Scholarship for representing the values of generosity, caring, concern, involvement, honesty, openness, and personal vibrancy within the Oneonta community. I used the scholarship money to pay for my J Term trip to South Africa. While there, my desire to help and do more in life thrived even more.”×
TAYLOR'S STORY
“Being able to broaden my horizons and see outside of the small community I grew up in helped me grow and mature as a person. The J Term experience had given me the confidence to apply to jobs. I ended up being hired for a job in my desired field before even graduating college. I now hold a position at the violence intervention program out of Opportunities for Otsego and work in Victims Advocacy and Prevention Education.” Close Taylor's StoryRead Taylor's Story
