Someone in the guitar world discovered that welding torches have differently sized nozzles and that those nozzles have to be cleaned with differently sized cleaning probes. These probes are gauged to fit the nozzles and have a ridged, abrasive portion. Maybe that can be repurposed to cut a nut slot, they thought. Makeshift nut files. MAGIC INSTRUMENTS GUITAR A new type of guitar that you can pick up and play, instantly. Meet the Magic Instruments Guitar. It's currently on Indiegogo where it's utterly smashed through its funding goal with tons of time left. The best way to get to grips with what it is and what it does is to take alook at the videos.
HANDMADE INSTRUMENTS OR CNC? A quick primer on CNC if you don’t know what it is. It stands for Computer Numerical Control and (for our discussion) it’s a machining tool that can precisely cut a hunk of wood into the shape of a guitar body or neck. It can follow a ‘plan’ and rout body outlines, round-overs, recesses, control and pickup cavities, bridge post holes THE PICKUP TRICK MANY BASS PLAYERS DON’T KNOW The squished foam problem. The bane of many bass-setter-upper’s life is squished foam. Underneath most body-mount bass pickups is a hunk of firm, spongy foam. The idea is that the foam ‘pushes back’ against the pickups as they’re screwed to the body. Over time, though, the foam can compress and fail to push back. SETUP FAQ: SHOULD I SETUP MY GUITAR IF I CHANGE STRING The truss rod is adjusted to counteract that tension and keep the neck more or less straight. Increasing string gauge probably means more tension which can translate to a more bowed neck. Decreasing gauge, means less tension and the rod can compensate too much, maybe even back-bowing the neck. It’s worth mentioning that some necks are more SETTING INTONATION ON A TELE First, let’s recap the prerequisites.. The rest of your setup must be right for you before you start. Bridge/Saddle radius considerations when setting up for slide guitar. Because a slide generally has a straight edge, some argue that setting your strings so they’re in a straight line is best for slide playing. Certainly, this is a reasonable argument. FREE RADIUS GAUGES AND THEIR MANY USES Download free radius gauges . Before we start, you can download a printable set of radius gauges for freesies if you like. Just paste them to a piece of card (a cereal box works fine) and cut them out. Voila, radius gauges. HOW TO SHIM A BOLT-ON NECK We remove the neck and add a shim underneath the end. This angles the neck back, allowing a more comfortable action. Typically, people will make a shim from a piece of cardboard, (business card), plastic (old credit card/guitar pick) or wood (lolly sticks or similar) and will insert it between the back pair of neck-screws and the end of thepocket.
