THE LINK BETWEEN STRESS AND AFIB The experienced electrophysiologists of Heart Rhythm Consultants, P.A. have been serving West Florida including Sarasota, Venice, Tampa, Port Charlotte, and Sun City Center for over 15 years. Our specialty cardiologists, or EP doctors, help patients manage their abnormal heart rhythm conditions, whether they suffer from arrhythmias likeatrial
SEVEN SIGNS YOUR PACEMAKER MIGHT BE FAILING A pacemaker is a device placed in your chest or abdomen that sends electrical pulses, helping the heart to beat at a normal rhythm. There are 3 million people living with pacemakers around the world, and 600,000 new pacemakers are implanted each year. These devices are essential to patient health, so it is important to know if your pacemaker has stopped working and what to do about it. 10 EFFECTS AFIB MAY HAVE ON YOUR BODY Atrial fibrillation, otherwise known as AFib, is a health condition that can be related to more serious issues. If you have AFib, you are among 2.7 million Americans diagnosed with the conditions, according to the American Heart Association. CATHETER ABLATION VS. MEDICATION IN AFIB: WHICH IS BETTER This procedure typically has a higher success rate than medication alone, which means there is less risk of symptoms returning. There is a low risk of complications, which is coupled with a quick recovery time. In fact, several research trials have found that catheter ablation offers more benefits than medication. SUMMER HEAT & HEART HEALTH Hot, humid weather is unpleasant for everyone, but it can be especially dangerous for people living with atrial fibrillation, or AFib.Being outside in extremely hot weather can increase your chances of an arrhythmia episode; and with temperatures averaging in the high 80’s to low 90’s during summer, it’s important to keep your heart health in mind when enjoying any outdoor activities. WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER HAVING CARDIAC ABLATION While this can be concerning for some patients, it’s important to remember that ablation of the heart is a big procedure and can take some time to settle into a normal rhythm. Some patients notice skipped heartbeats, extra heartbeats, shortness of breath, and other symptoms associated with arrhythmias for four to six weeks following theablation.
WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE OF THE WATCHMAN PROCEDURE The risk of stroke in patients with AFib is high. Nearly one in three patients will experience one. The good news is the WATCHMAN procedure is proven successful in 94.7 percent of patients. ABOUT DR. RAJESH MALIK Rajesh Malik, MD FACC, FHRS is Board Certified in Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Cardiac Electrophysiology and has been practicing for over 20 years. Dr. Malik joined Heart Rhythm Consultants, P.A. in February 2020 after servicing the Bradenton area. Respectively, he received training in cardiologyand cardiac
BETA BLOCKERS AND WEIGHT GAIN: IS IT INEVITABLE? Beta blockers, normally taken for high blood pressure and other heart issues, have been known to cause weight gain in a significant number of patients.According to the Mayo Clinic, the average weight gain that can be directly attributed to the medication is 2 to 4 pounds. So why do so many patients complain about stubborn weight gain, month after month, and a difficulty losing the excess poundage? HEART RATE CONTROL FOR AFIB PATIENTS It is not unheard of for AFib patients to have heart rates anywhere from 100 to 175 beats-per-minute. Unfortunately, when the heart rate is that high, your blood pressure may also decrease, which could make you more prone to dizziness, fainting, and other problems such as: Heart palpitations. Confusion. Shortness of breath. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS YOU NEED A PACEMAKER? A pacemaker is a small device that sends electric impulses to restore the heart’s rhythm and maintain a regular heart rate. Pacemakers are used to treat arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation, also known as AFib, which are problems with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. QUESTIONS TO ASK AFTER AFIB DIAGNOSIS Dr. Dilip J. Mathew, Dr. Antonio Moretta, and Dr. Rajesh Malik perform arrhythmia treatments like cardiac ablation, cryoablation, and implanting pacemakers or defibrillators. Dr. Mathew has performed nearly 5,000 complex cardiac ablations. View our office locations in Sarasota and Venice, Florida. Connect Agency 2020-09-29T17:56:02-04:00. WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER AFIB ABLATION What to Expect in the Days Following Your AFib Ablation. After the procedure, you may notice a lump about the size of a walnut or small bruise at the catheter insertion site in the groin area. This is normal. However, if you notice that the area becomes tender or painful, warm to the touch, or if it swells, you should contact yourdoctor
WATCHMAN OR ABLATION: WHEN EACH PROCEDURE IS USED The WATCHMAN device is used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients living with AFib. WATCHMAN is designed to open the left atrial appendage to allow for easier blood flow. It is made up of a frame with mesh covering that expands to fit the size of the left atrial opening. WATCHMAN attaches to the tissue by using ten anchors toincrease stability.
HOW DOES STRESS AFFECT AFIB? AFib symptoms can worsen due to stress. Research has shown that high levels of stress can increase the severity of AFib symptoms, or cause latent symptoms to manifest. Since managing your symptoms is a vital part of ensuring your long-term health with AFib, reducing stress levels should be one of your top priorities. DANGERS OF LIVING WITH AFIB If you’re living with AFib, you also have an increased chance of suffering from heart failure. One of the most dangerous results of AFib is that it causes the blood to flow abnormally and inefficiently throughout the body. Your vital internal organs require regular and sufficient deliveries of oxygen-rich blood to perform their corefunctions

WELCOME TO HEART RHYTHM CONSULTANTS, P.A. OFFICES IN SARASOTA, VENICE, & PORT CHARLOTTE TREATING ABNORMAL HEART RHYTHMS & FAST HEARTBEATS DILIP J. MATHEW, MD, FACC, FHRS, is Board Certified in Cardiology & Cardiac Electrophysiology and has been practicing in the Tampa Bay area since 2004. He has devoted his Sarasota practice entirely to the management of heart rhythm disorders. Dr. Mathew is involved in all aspects of managing cardiac arrhythmias . Respectively, he received training in cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard in Boston and in cardiac electrophysiology at Lahey Clinic,Massachusetts.
ANTONIO MORETTA, MD, FHRS is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, and Echocardiography. Dr. Moretta joined Heart Rhythm Consultants, P.A. in November 2018 after servicing the Huntington area for five years. Respectively, he received training in cardiology at Lenox Hill Hospital and Northshore University and in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at Stony BrookUniversity.
Electrophysiologists, or EP doctor for short, are cardiologists who have additional education and training in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms. Cardiac EPs could also be considered “heart electricians.” DO YOU NEED AN ELECTROPHYSIOLOGIST IN FLORIDA? Cardiac health is an important factor, especially as we get older. Every lifestyle choice we make, at any age, plays a role in our overall cardiac condition. At Heart Rhythm Consultants, it is our goal to help our patients manage their condition, whether they suffer from arrhythmias or other irregularities with the heartbeat. Dr. Dilip J. Mathew and Dr. Antonio Moretta are electrophysiologists serving residents of Sarasota, Venice, Tampa, Port Charlotte and Sun City Center, giving every patient the care and attention they deserve. EP STUDIES & ABLATION PROCEDURES Abnormal rhythms can range anything from very slow heart rates to very fast heart rates. Types of heart rhythm disorders could include bradycardia, tachycardia, premature heartbeats and atrial fibrillation . Dr. Mathew performs implantation of pacemakers, defibrillators,
as well as
electrophysiology (EP) studiesand
ablations. He has a special interest in lead extractionand ablation
therapies for atrial fibrillation. Dr. Mathew has successfully performed OVER 5,000 OF THESE COMPLEX ABLATIONS (one of the highest volume operators in the southeastern United States). Dr. Mathew also performed the first left atrial appendage closure procedure in West Florida and has performed the most in the southeastern United States. Dr. Antonio Moretta performs implantation of pacemakers, defibrillators, as well as EP studies and ablations. He has a special interest in HIS bundle pacemakers and defibrillators. This is a new and innovative system where Dr. Moretta recircuits the patient’s natural electrical system instead of pacing abnormal heart muscle avoiding certain types of heart failure that is caused by the typicalpacemaker.
Using cutting-edge imaging techniques such as intracardiac ultrasound, Dr. Moretta also performs his EP studies and ablations with no fluoroscopy. This means that the procedure is performed without any radiation. Medical testing is the number one source of radiation to patients and radiation exposure is cumulative, meaning that the more you are exposed, the higher the risk of ill-effects (such as certain types of cancer) no matter how long ago your last exposure may havebeen.
DR. MATHEW AND DR. MORETTA ARE ON STAFF AT THE FOLLOWING WEST FLORIDAHOSPITALS:
* Sarasota Memorial Hospital * Doctors Hospital of Sarasota * Venice Regional Bayfront Health * Bayfront Health of Port Charlotte * Fawcett Memorial Hospital * Lakewood Ranch Medical Center _My goal is to ensure each patient’s heart finds its normal rhythm again, providing for a better quality of life.__– Dr. Mathew_
* Board Certified in Cardiac Electrophysiology * Fellowship at Brigham & Women’s, Harvard * Has performed nearly 5,000 ablation procedures _Patient experience is the heart of what we do. I strive to provide my patients with the time and attention they deserve, while using innovative technologies to improve their quality of life.– Dr. Moretta_
* Board Certified in Cardiac Electrophysiology * Fellowship trained at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, NY, and Stony Brook University Hospital__
