The Museum of Military History examines the history of the Habsburg Monarchy from the end of the 16th century to the end of the monarchy in 1918, as well as the subsequent years up until 1945. REPUBLIC AND DICTATORSHIP A special section is dedicated to a fatal period of the more recent Austrian history. It impressively illustrates Austria’s development from imperial times to the interwar period and World War II up to the times of the Second Republic. WAR AGAINST THE OTTOMANS The Ottomans, who had continued to advance to the west and north in the 16 th century, besieging Vienna for the first time in 1529, did no longer, at least temporarily, represent a danger for Central Europe. However, East and Southeast Europe were still a part of the Ottoman Empire, and the concern at new advancements remained. SARAJEVO - PERMANENT EXHIBITIONS FIRST FLOOR - EXHIBITIONS Sarajevo. Hall of Fame. The museum's centrepiece is formed by the central hall, with its cupola (26.5 metres in height), as well as the side halls, which are linked to the central hall through open arcades. This is undoubtedly the artistic highlight of Theophil Hansen's Vienna period. Apart from the items exhibited within the museum building and those standing in front of the façade, most of the guns are exhibited in two special buildings next to object 1 (Objekt 1), the ‘Artillery Halls’, which were built after the Second World War to replace buildings that had been bombed.FRANZ JOSEPH HALL
Franz Joseph Hall. The most important objects, paintings, and uniforms from Francis Joseph’s time illustrate the multi-ethnic state Austria-Hungary. Moreover, exhibits once owned by Crown Prince Rudolf are at display. The defeat of 1866 had far-reaching consequences for the Habsburg monarchy. The kingdom Piemont-Sardinia took these happenings as a reason for declaring war on Austria, whereas in Hungary revolutionary forces formed and beganto march on Vienna.
