HIKING JOURNEYS
Grandma Gatewood Trail: Old Man’s Cave – Cedar Falls – Ash Cave. One of the crown jewels in Ohio hiking is the Grandma Gatewood Trail in Hocking Hills that connects three of the top ten natural destinations in the state: Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls and Ash Cave. Hocking Hills is the best that Ohio has to offer for natural beauty,IMO
GRANDMA GATEWOOD TRAIL: OLD MAN’S CAVE One of the crown jewels in Ohio hiking is the Grandma Gatewood Trail in Hocking Hills that connects three of the top ten natural destinations in the state: Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls and Ash Cave. Hocking Hills is the best that Ohio has to offer for natural beauty, IMO, and a frequent destination for our family. Being only 90 minutes from our home in Columbus, I have probably spent over 100 DOLLY SODS DAY 2: BEAR CREEK TRAILHEAD I would have preferred to stay on the trail for three days, but with the original plans squashed by the high water, I returned to my truck on the Rohrbaugh Trail. I was surprised how much the trail had dried up in the less-than 24 hours when I came down the trail. A good sign.RED RIVER GORGE
Red River Gorge is known for the tremendous amount of sandstone rock formations and caves, especially the approximately 100 arches throughout the area. There are many short, intersecting trails to the highlights, which make it a perfect destination for numerous day hikes. In reality, the layout doesn’t offer itself greatly for mytype of
MT. ROGERS – DAY 2: THOMAS KNOB SHELTER TO OLD ORCHARD The second day of the trip was the money day. Several miles of unfettered views on top of the balds of Mt. Rogers NRA along Wilburn Ridge. Add to it that it was a very comfortable day and the fall color was pretty good, it was definitely one of my best hiking days in the RED RIVER GORGE: TWO NIGHT, CLOCKWISE BACKPACK LOOP The goal was to get a good sampling of the area and hit Grey’s Arch and Hanson’s Point as the main attractions. For the record, I did the following clockwise loop: 220-208-220-226-223-209-221-Hanson’s Point-221-220. There is a separate backpacker parking lot at Koomer Ridge Campground, and I left their for the Koomer Ridge Trail (220 MT. ROGERS – DAY 1: GRINDSTONE CAMPGROUND THOMAS KNOB Mt. Rogers – Day 1: Grindstone Campground Thomas Knob Shelter. I arrived at the Grindstone Campground after Noon. In my prep for the trip, it was highly recommended to park at the campground ($3 per night in 2011) instead of leaving your car at a trailhead. Given it was a weekday in late September, it was dead. RED RIVER GORGE: DOUBLE ARCH/AUXIER RIDGE LOOP DAY HIKE The western side of Red River Gorge has a very popular day hiking area that includes the highlights of Double Arch, Courthouse Rock and Auxier Ridge. I decided to knock this off with a daypack prior to backpacking a couple miles to a campsite in a different part of the park later in the day. JMT DAY 16 – BUBBS CREEK TO BIGHORN PLATEAU – HIKING JOURNEYS The days keep getting more glorious. Better enjoy it, for there are only two more days! I was off by 7:30am, and got to enjoy one of my coffee rations to help get me prepared for the big hike over Forester Pass. One notable item from the night was that I heard a cow bell JMT DAY 8 – VERMILLION VALLEY RESORT TO BEAR CREEK JMT Day 8 – Vermillion Valley Resort to Bear Creek. My day of respite at VVR didn’t go quite as planned, but it still proved to be just what my body (and supplies) needed at this stage of the hike. I was able to get three square meals, a bunch of supplies,HIKING JOURNEYS

A few general observations: IMO, BIBE is a life-lister. The place is so diverse, pristine, enchanting, spectacular, challenging, unique and majestic, it is something any serious backpacker MUST do. ROAN – HIKING JOURNEYS The weather condition from late last night resulted in a stunning view from on top of the Knob in the morning. I was on the trail by 9:00am with the anticipationJOHN MUIR TRAIL
JMT: August 24 – September 10, 2016. The impetus of starting this blog was to document this 50th Birthday epic journey. It is difficult to capture such a lengthy and amazing experience, but hopefully the time and organization I spent on this can give friends and family an indication how awesome it was, as well as anyone considering the trip information that will assist them in getting the OML DAY 2: DODSON TRAIL TO BLUE CREEK CANYON By far, the best night's sleep I have ever had in the backcountry. I was out by 9pm, slept straight to 2:30am, and didn't get out of the tent until 7am. The clouds turned into rain, with a steady drizzle early in the morning, and lasted until 9am-ish. Someone reported that the area got 0.2”, OML DAY 3: BLUE CREEK CANYON TO BOOT CANYON BC02 CAMPSITE I woke up at 6:30am wanting to get an early start for the climb up Blue Creek Canyon (2,000’+ elevation gain) and get it mostly done in the shade. I also wanted to be properly fueled, so I had two cups of coffee and a big breakfast (Pro Bar Meal and half a bag of JMT DAY 7 – PURPLE LAKE TO VERMILLION VALLEY RESORT JMT Day 7 – Purple Lake to Vermillion Valley Resort. Even after spending a bunch of time preparing the toes for the hike, I was still on the trail by 7:45am. Hocking Hills is the best that Ohio has to offer for natural beauty, IMO, and a frequent destination for our family. Being only 90 minutes from our home in Columbus, I have probably spent over 100 DOLLY SODS DAY 2: BEAR CREEK TRAILHEAD I would have preferred to stay on the trail for three days, but with the original plans squashed by the high water, I returned to my truck on the Rohrbaugh Trail. I was surprised how much the trail had dried up in the less-than 24 hours when I came down the trail. A good sign.RED RIVER GORGE
Red River Gorge is known for the tremendous amount of sandstone rock formations and caves, especially the approximately 100 arches throughout the area. There are many short, intersecting trails to the highlights, which make it a perfect destination for numerous day hikes. In reality, the layout doesn’t offer itself greatly for mytype of
RED RIVER GORGE: TWO NIGHT, CLOCKWISE BACKPACK LOOP The goal was to get a good sampling of the area and hit Grey’s Arch and Hanson’s Point as the main attractions. For the record, I did the following clockwise loop: 220-208-220-226-223-209-221-Hanson’s Point-221-220. There is a separate backpacker parking lot at Koomer Ridge Campground, and I left their for the Koomer Ridge Trail (220 MT. ROGERS – DAY 1: GRINDSTONE CAMPGROUND THOMAS KNOB Mt. Rogers – Day 1: Grindstone Campground Thomas Knob Shelter. I arrived at the Grindstone Campground after Noon. In my prep for the trip, it was highly recommended to park at the campground ($3 per night in 2011) instead of leaving your car at a trailhead. Given it was a weekday in late September, it was dead. MT. ROGERS – DAY 2: THOMAS KNOB SHELTER TO OLD ORCHARD The second day of the trip was the money day. Several miles of unfettered views on top of the balds of Mt. Rogers NRA along Wilburn Ridge. Add to it that it was a very comfortable day and the fall color was pretty good, it was definitely one of my best hiking days in the RED RIVER GORGE: DOUBLE ARCH/AUXIER RIDGE LOOP DAY HIKE The western side of Red River Gorge has a very popular day hiking area that includes the highlights of Double Arch, Courthouse Rock and Auxier Ridge. As bad as yesterday was, today was equally awesome! A new "best day hiking ever" record was established, and I felt great all day. After a cold and windy night (I still slept well), I got an early start (7:15am), inspired by the beautiful morning in Evolution Basin.HIKING JOURNEYS
A quick wrap up of camp and I was on the trail by 7:45am for my first big hiking day with the pack. The first portion of the day was going to be a bear - 3400' elevation gain past 9,000'.HIKINGJOURNEYS
After analyzing the map, I decided that I would end my trip this day with a return to Grindstone Campground via the Iron Mountain Trail.
