Lakeside River Park is a small, yet scenic stretch of the San Diego River. This trail is something of a work in progress. The original groundbreaking took place in 2006, and since then workers and volunteers have built a nice little trail and restored a DICTIONARY HILL OPEN SPACE PRESERVE Dictionary Hill Open Space Preserve in Spring Valley is the newest addition to the County’s open space parks. Thanks to the dedication and perseverance of the Dictionary Hill Open Space Advocates, the County Board of Supervisors recently voted to acquire and preserve these 175 acres.. In the 1800’s, Dictionary Hill was known asLookout Mountain.

Kumeyaay Lake in Mission Trails Regional Park was once a series of gravel pits along the San Diego River. After being mined out in the 1970’s, the area was restored and has since become an important nesting ground for the endangered Least Bell’s Vireo.VIEJAS MOUNTAIN
Viejas Mountain. The rugged, triangular peak of Viejas Mountain rises just north of Interstate 8 in Alpine. The trail up the western flank of the mountain is a steep and no-nonsense affair through thick chaparral brush with zero shade. DEL DIOS HIGHLANDS PRESERVE Del Dios Highlands Preserve. Del Dios Highlands is a 774 acre preserve adjacent to the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve. The Preserve has one trail, a wide fire road, which begins along the Del Dios Highway and climbs just over 900 feet to an unnamed peak. The road then goes on to connect to the Elfin Forest trail system. MULE HILL TRAIL TO OLD COACH Mule Hill Trail to Old Coach. Filed under 6-10 miles, Coast to Crest Trail, Dog Friendly, Escondido, North County, San Dieguito River, Trail Write-Ups. History buffs will enjoy this easy hike along the Coast to Crest Trail which passes Mule Hill, site of an historicbattle in 1846.

People tend to get pretty excited about waterfalls, especially in San Diego where fresh water in any form is pretty rare. Lakeside River Park is a small, yet scenic stretch of the San Diego River. This trail is something of a work in progress. The original groundbreaking took place in 2006, and since then workers and volunteers have built a nice little trail and restored a DICTIONARY HILL OPEN SPACE PRESERVE Dictionary Hill Open Space Preserve in Spring Valley is the newest addition to the County’s open space parks. Thanks to the dedication and perseverance of the Dictionary Hill Open Space Advocates, the County Board of Supervisors recently voted to acquire and preserve these 175 acres.. After being mined out in the 1970’s, the area was restored and has since become an important nesting ground for the endangered Least Bell’s Vireo. DEL DIOS HIGHLANDS PRESERVE Del Dios Highlands Preserve. Del Dios Highlands is a 774 acre preserve adjacent to the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve. The Preserve has one trail, a wide fire road, which begins along the Del Dios Highway and climbs just over 900 feet to an unnamed peak. The road then goes on to connect to the Elfin Forest trail system. MULE HILL TRAIL TO OLD COACH Mule Hill Trail to Old Coach. MOUNT WOODSON (POTATO CHIP ROCK) VIA HIGHWAY 67 Mount Woodson has become an extremely popular hiking destination due to the famous Potato Chip Rock – a fragile looking granite shard which, from the right angle, can look like its extending into nothingness, making for some creative photo opportunities.KITCHEN CREEK FALLS
People tend to get pretty excited about waterfalls, especially in San Diego where fresh water in any form is pretty rare. Kitchen Creek Falls isn’t the biggest or most impressive set of falls you’ll ever see, but this is still a fun little hike. Eagle Rock is perhaps the most aptly named rock formation I have ever encountered. Found along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) just a few miles from highway 79 in Warner Springs, this awesome pile of granite EL CAJON MOUNTAIN ("EL CAP") El Cajon Mountain, or “El Cap” as its often referred to, is a major landmark in Eastern San Diego. The prominent granite ridge can be easily identified from many of southeastern San Diego’s trails and draws your attention as you drive east on Interstate 8. OLD SURVEY ROAD 97 (RAMONA GRASSLANDS PRESERVE) Old Survey Road 97 was once a main thoroughfare connecting Ramona and Escondido. Established in the late 1800’s, the road was used for mail deliveries, gold miners travelling to Julian, and General Stephen Kearney and Kit Carson as they made their way to the Battle of SanPasqual.
LAKESIDE RIVER PARK
Lakeside River Park is a small, yet scenic stretch of the San Diego River. This trail is something of a work in progress. The original groundbreaking took place in 2006, and since then workers and volunteers have built a nice little trail and restored a DICTIONARY HILL OPEN SPACE PRESERVE Dictionary Hill Open Space Preserve in Spring Valley is the newest addition to the County’s open space parks. Thanks to the dedication and perseverance of the Dictionary Hill Open Space Advocates, the County Board of Supervisors recently voted to acquire and preserve these 175 acres.. In the 1800’s, Dictionary Hill was known asLookout Mountain.
KNOTT GROVE
Knott Grove. Filed under Dog Friendly, North County, San Diego, Trail Write-Ups, Trans County Trail, Under 5 miles. In 1986, college student Cara Knott was murdered by an on-duty CHP Officer and her body was dumped from an abandoned bridge above Penasquitos Creek. Her father, Sam Knott, channelled his grief and spent the next decade lobbying toVIEJAS MOUNTAIN
Viejas Mountain. The rugged, triangular peak of Viejas Mountain rises just north of Interstate 8 in Alpine. The trail up the western flank of the mountain is a steep and no-nonsense affair through thick chaparral brush with zero shade. This is not a hike for hot summer days, but makes for a fantastic early morning workout or winterexcursion.

DEL DIOS HIGHLANDS PRESERVE Del Dios Highlands Preserve. Del Dios Highlands is a 774 acre preserve adjacent to the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve. The Preserve has one trail, a wide fire road, which begins along the Del Dios Highway and climbs just over 900 feet to an unnamed peak. The road then goes on to connect to the Elfin Forest trail system. MULE HILL TRAIL TO OLD COACH Mule Hill Trail to Old Coach. Filed under 6-10 miles, Coast to Crest Trail, Dog Friendly, Escondido, North County, San Dieguito River, Trail Write-Ups. People tend to get pretty excited about waterfalls, especially in San Diego where fresh water in any form is pretty rare. Kitchen Creek Falls isn’t the biggest or most impressive set of falls you’ll ever see, but this is still a fun little hike. It’s not as busy as some of the larger falls in the area (like Cedar Creek or ThreeSisters
PYLES PEAK (MISSION TRAILS REGIONAL PARK) While just about everyone has hiked Cowles Mountain, surprisingly few bother to continue on to Pyles Peak, the second highest peak in Mission Trails.Pyles Peak can only be accessed by first summiting Cowles then traveling another another 1.5 miles northwest. RAMONA GRASSLANDS PRESERVE The Ramona Grasslands Preserve is a relatively new addition to San Diego’s roster of County Parks. Originally acquired by the Nature Conservancy, the land was later given to the County and a portion was opened to the public in 2011.FOSTER POINT

The Rock Mountain Preserve in Fallbrook is a small preserve just north of the Santa Margarita River hiking trail. Iron Mountain is one of the more popular hikes in San Diego County, maybe second only to Cowles Mountain. The trail head is easily accessible, located right off Highway 67 in Poway, offers a reasonably challenging trek for the average person, and on a clear day has some amazing views of northeast San Diego County. WALKER PRESERVE TRAIL The Walker Preserve Trail is the most recently completed section of the San Diego River Trail. This section encompasses over 100 acres of mixed sage scrub, riparian and wetland habitat capable of supporting at least 3 federally protected bird species (the Southwestern willow flycatcher, the California gnatcatcher, and the least Bell’s viero).LAKESIDE RIVER PARK
