HISTORIC HOUSES
The estate tea house and the gardens surrounding it are a memorial. Statue in the pond is a memorial a place to reflect. Inisfada front facade. The house is presently serving as the St. Ignatius Jesuit Retreat House, which is unfortunately, slated to close on June 1, 2013. This Manhasset, NY house is currently up for sale at $49million.
THE BRAES, GLEN COVE NY The Braes, Glen Cove NY. I visited this house on January 29, 2012. This Jacobean-styled house was built in 1912 for Herbert Pratt and his wife. It is the second house to sit on this site. (The first house, a Georgian revival styled house, was also built for Pratt in 1902. The Pratt’s tore it down when they decided on the Jacobean style suitedSANDS POINT NY
It is part of the Sands Point Preserve. Castle Gould was the name of this whole estate when it was built by Howard Gould. In 1917, Gould sold his estate to Daniel Guggenheim who kept the name Castle Gould for the stables and renamed this main house Hempstead House. Detail - Main entrance. Rear facade of Hempstead House. INISFADA, MANHASSET NY Inisfada, Manhasset NY. Inisfada (Gaelic, meaning Long Island) was built for Nicholas and Genevieve Brady in 1919 by the architect John Torrey Windrim. It is an excellent example of the Tudor Revival Style. The facade of the house is decorated with scenes from Fairy Tales. In addition to the fables, the facade is beautifully decorated withnature.
OLD WESTBURY GARDENS, OLD WESTBURY, NY On June 22, 2008 I also visited the Main House at Old Westbury Gardens. The front entrance (North Side) to Westbury House. The back of the house (South Side), facing the gardens. A sphinx (one of a pair) on the South Terrace. The South Terrace - just beautiful! The West side of the house. LookingTHORNE ESTATE

Kempe was a stained glass artist by trade and in addition to the house plans, he designed the stained LA SELVA, UPPER BROOKVILLE, NY La Selva, Upper Brookville, NY. This Italina Renaissance style home was designed by the architects Hunt & Hunt in 1912 for banking and railroad tycoon Henry Sanderson. The home is in private hands and is currently for sale. The Manor was Mr. Vanderbilts’ caretaker cottage and was designed by the Architectural firm of Warren & Wetmore. For years it was privately owned, and then the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum bought the property a few years ago. When I visited this house it was hosting a designer show house. Mansion lore has this fireplace originally coming from the Idle Hour Estate. The French style of the fireplace makes the story plausible. It is not in keeping with the IDLE HOUR, OAKDALE, NY Idle Hour, Oakdale, NY. This beautiful mansion is now the home of Dowling College . It was built for William K Vanderbilt I and designed by Richard Howland Hunt between 1900-1904. This is the second mansion on this site. The first Mansion burnt down in 1899. The mansion is now known as Fortunoff Hall. Idle Hour on the South Shore History Site.SUFFOLK COUNTY
Deepwells Farm – Saint James, NY. On July 19, 2008 I visited the Suffolk County owned Deepwells Farm for the first time. The estate was built in 1845 and was renovated in 1924 as a Greek Revival Style home. The farm is open for special events, on this day a craft fairMILLIONAIRE’S ROW
On July 10, 2008 I visited Williamsport, PA. In addition to currently being the home of the Little League World Series, Williamsport was, in the 1880's, home to more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the United States. These homes and churches were built by lumber barons. Today there are limited trolley tours of AUGUST | 2008 | HISTORIC HOUSES The Grist Mill, Miller’s House and Stump Pond are all accessible via a staircase. The Blydenburgh / Weld House was built in 1821 and added onto in the 1860’s. The Caretaker’s Cottage is Gothic Revival in the style of Andrew Jackson Downing. Ogden Goelet, a New York real estate developer, hired Richard Morris Hunt to design Ochre Court between 1888-1892. It is an English Manor House in style and it was designed by the architectural firm Peabody & Stearns. Construction began in 1887 and was completed 1892. In 1894, the Vanderbilts began renting Rough Point to summer guests (having moved to “Hyde Park”- now known as the Vanderbilt Mansion NEWPORT RI | HISTORIC HOUSES Isaac Bell House / Edna Villa, Newport RI. Olana, Hudson NY. Olana was the home and studio of Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church. The house was designed by Calvert Vaux (best known for his work on NYC’s Central Park) in 1872. It is a Persian styled confection located at the top of a hill, overlookingthe Hudson River.

On the grounds there are several beautiful memorials. The estate tea house and the gardens surrounding it are a memorial. Statue in the pond is a memorial a place to reflect Inisfada front facade The house is presently serving as the St. Ignatius Jesuit Retreat House, which is unfortunately, slated to close on June 1, 2013. This Manhasset, NY house is currently up for sale at $49 million. After visiting this beautiful house, I personally would hate to see it demolished. I believe that the Jesuits are being short sighted in their desire to divest themselves of this property. There is a need for a place like this in today’s society – this perhaps has never been more true than now – after the wrath of Hurricane Sandy and in the wake of the Newtown (CT) shootings. This summer home was built for Sarah Morgan, the sister of J.Pierpont Morgan.
Rear Facade
It is in the Jacobean Revival style. Jacobean Revival Detail This mansion was very nearly lost to the wreaking ball in the 1990’s. Extensive restoration work is taking place both inside and out. Some of this work was made possible from a site use fee – the house was used as the Orphanage in the Movie “The Cider HouseRules.”

December 19, 2012 · 6:02 pm SPRINGWOOD / FDR ESTATE, HYDE PARK NY Springwood Front Facade Springwood was the home of Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The original Italianate-style house has been added to several times, the most recent modifications were madein 1915.
Roof line detail
The house actually belonged to Franklin’s mother, Sara. Sara paid for the work that Franklin designed with the architects Hoppin & Koen, doubling the original house’s size. These alterations gave the house a Colonial Revival Style identity. Statue of Eleanor and FDR The estate is quite large and features individual houses for both Eleanor and Franklin, The FDR Presidential Library, a Visitor’s Center, several estate outbuildings and the 32nd President’s FinalResting Place.

The day I visited, the house was not open to the public and extensive restoration work was being performed on the exterior. I look forward to returning here one day. Facade Facing the Hudson River It seems that there are 2 web sites for this park. One by a friends group and one by NY State. If you decide
to visit, the hours posted on the State Site seem to be moreup-to-date.
