ARCHITECTURE AND PRIVACY: DESIGNING SENSITIVE SPACES Architects play a key role in designing sensitive spaces and shaping the privacy of a building. In many ways, architecture and privacy go hand-in-hand. At HMC Architects, we are acutely aware of the value that privacy holds for a building’s occupants, whether they are visitors, residents, or staff members. As such, we work to designspaces
CIVIC BUILDING AND CIVIC CENTER ARCHITECTURE: DESIGN FOR A civic center is a network of spaces or buildings that provide essential services to a city or town. It can include everything from government offices and public meeting spaces to free classes and memorials honoring important members of the community. Civic centers are tailored to support the often very specific needs of communities. EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT DESIGN FOR A MORE EFFICIENT AND SAFE HMC has been designing healthcare facilities since 1940 and we are passionate about being part of the evolution of healthcare design. OFFICE ARCHITECTURE CONCEPTS: HOW WORKPLACE DESIGN AFFECTS If you’re ready to incorporate these office architecture concepts into your building, contact HMC Architects today. Not only have we designed our own efficient office space from scratch, but we have also designed many other spaces for our civic and healthcare clients. ARCHITECTURAL STYLES FOR HEALTHCARE BUILDINGS: A GUIDE Right from early schematic design phase, and before construction even begins, architects must think carefully about the building’s facade design, layout and location. The most effective exterior architectural styles for healthcare buildings are: Organic design. When the building blends into the surrounding environment, it looks more welcoming REPURPOSED COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS: FROM ABANDONED BIG BOX TO In the early 1980’s social scientists James Wilson and George Kelling introduced a theory labeled the “broken windows theory”. This theory assumes that the built environment communicates to people, such as a broken window transmitting the message that a community displays a lack of informal social control, and so is unable or unwilling to defend itself against crime and continued APPLYING EVIDENCE-BASED DESIGN TO HEALTHCARE FACILITIES When building or renovating a medical care facility to best support patients and staff, consider evidence-based design. Evidence-based design is the use of research studies, in-depth interviews with staff and patients, and outcome data to create a more effective healingenvironment.

IMPROVING HOSPITAL DESIGN FOR BETTER INFECTION CONTROL Hospitals should be a safe haven for those who are sick, but the truth is that they are often hotspots for highly transmissible infectious diseases, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), norovirus, Clostridium difficile, tuberculosis, and, most recently, COVID-19. To combat the spread of COVID-19, hospitals are scrambling to implement measures to safely handle the TEMECULA VALLEY HOSPITAL This idea translated into the design and construction of the Temecula Valley Hospital—one of the fastest and most cost-effective hospitals ever built in California. Since healthcare tends to be siloed—resulting in redundancies, inefficiencies and unnecessary touch points for patients—we had to think beyond our standardmethodology.
