EXECUTIVE LEADERS
Mark has over 20 years’ experience working in the humanitarian and development sectors. Since 2012, Mark has helped position Hope and Homes for Children as a leader in global deinstitutionalisation. Meanwhile, the number of children benefiting from our work, and its international expansion, has trebled. Mark previously served as CEO atWar Child.
WHY DO CHILDREN END UP IN ORPHANAGES 80% of children in orphanages have a living parent, but are abandoned because of poverty, disabilities or discrimination. There are four sets of reasons why children end up in orphanages. REASON 1: POVERTY, DISABILITIES, DISCRIMINATION. Some families struggle to cope, whether it is in finding work, feeding their children or paying for schoolfees.
WHAT IS INSTITUTIONAL CARE? 15 CHARACTERISTICS OF Institutional care is a type of residential care for large groups of children characterised by a one-size-fits-all approach. Children living in institutions, also known as orphanages, are provided with the same services, irrespective of their age, gender, abilities, needs and reasons for separation from parents.CAMILLA OTTO
Camilla is an international development professional who has devoted her career to work with development aid questions and with the international development community. A Swedish national, Camilla has worked in the UN system (UNDP, UNIFEM, UNESCO) with the European Commission in Brussels and for the British Government in its Development Ministry (Department for International BULGARIA - HOPE AND HOMES FOR CHILDREN Hope and Homes for Children has been working across Bulgaria since 2009. There are currently over 1,000 children in orphanages, including almost 500 children under the age of three. Since 2009 we have closed 18 institutions, halving the number of babies and young children confined to them across Bulgaria.There were around 2,400 children in32

WHY DO CHILDREN END UP IN ORPHANAGES 80% of children in orphanages have a living parent, but are abandoned because of poverty, disabilities or discrimination. There are four sets of reasons why children end up in orphanages. REASON 1: POVERTY, DISABILITIES, DISCRIMINATION.
