31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN — DAY 9: THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE (1982) –BY BILL VAN VEGHEL

------------------------- Title: The Slumber Party MassacreCountry: USA
Year: 1982
Director: Amy Holden Jones _The Slumber Party Massacre_ is a movie that I can’t help but smile about when it is brought up. Not because it is a classic of the genre or brings some innovation to the traditional slasher narrative, but is one of those coming of age films for me. I saw this in the seventh grade with a friend of mine and, full disclosure, I had not seen in its entirety since until tonight, still brings a smile to my face. I had such a good time with the film when I was 12 that I decided to revisit the film. Ah, the memories. _The Slumber Party Massacre_ is a 1982 film with a low to modest budget shot as the slasher genre was on the rise and no doubt the creative minds behind this film sought to cash in on the genres’ popularity. It had all the makings of success that the target audience loved: boobs, blood and a maniac that may or may not survive in a stereotypical American suburb. So why have so few seen or heard of it? Why is it not mentioned in the same breath as _Friday the Thirteenth_, _Halloween_ or even _Prom Night_? Let me explain. Continue reading → Posted in Blog Posts | Tagged 1980s horror, 31 days of

Frances is way in over her head though, when she realizes Greta wants more than just her purse. The general consensus is that _Greta_ is a terrible waste of time. BUT to those yet to see it or to those who have seen it, despite it’s flaws _Greta_ gives us an Isabelle Hupert role we’ve never seen her play, and puts depth to female roles of women her age, who usually are put to the sidelines in mainstream films, instead of being a lead. Some may say that _Greta_ promotes mistrust in others, but that’s the horror genre as a whole and the film knows it doesn’t take itself too seriously. 31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN — DAY 7: WHITE OF THE EYE (1987) – BY VICIOUSVICTOR

------------------------- TITLE: WHITE OF THE EYE Country: United KingdomYear: 1987
Director: Donald Cammell__ _White of the Eye_ is a horror-art movie first unleashed on an unsuspecting public in 1987. It’s the magnum opus of troubled genius director Donald Cammell (the guy who co-directed the crime-drama _Performance_ with Nicolas Roeg in 1970). It starts as a beautifully-shot police procedural; someone is killing wealthy suburban housewives in an isolated Arizona community, and high-end audio expert Paul White (David Keith – _An Officer and a Gentleman_) is the prime suspect. He’s comes to a stalemate with the primary detective (Art Evans – _Fright Night_) when White’s wife, Joan (Cathy Moriarty – _Raging Bull_) makes a significant discovery. After that, things get… weird. The pastels and brightness of the desert set pieces and ultra-modern houses are gorgeous and unusual for a horror movie. I would guess Coralie Fargeat (who directed _Revenge_ a couple of years ago) is afan.
There are so many cool ideas in this movie, I could write a ten-page essay, yet _White of the Eye _succeeds first and foremost as a thrilling slasher with unique, gruesome kills that will haunt you for the rest of your days. The murders are beautifully choreographed (like what you’d expect in a Dario Argento movie), and draw visual inspiration from painters like Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon. There is one kill in particular — you’ll know it when you see it — where I was absolutely floored by the performance of the the actressplaying the victim.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN — DAY 6: DEATH SHIP (1980) – BY DR. SHOCK Posted on October 6, 2019by producer

-------------------------TITLE: DEATH SHIP
Country: Canada
Year: 1980
Director: Alvin Rakoff Death Ship (1980), a Canadian-produced horror film, was based on a script written by Jack Hill, the creative mind behind such exploitation classics as _Spider Baby_, _The Swinging Cheerleaders_, and _Coffy_. Though only billed as a story consultant (the final screenplay was penned by John Robins), just seeing Hill’s name in the credits was enough to pique my interest. And while it may lack the exploitative goodness of some of Hill’s directorial efforts, D_eath Ship_ is just eerie enough to hold your attention. A jam-packed luxury cruise liner, scheduled to return to dock in three days’ time, is rammed and destroyed by a ship that seemingly appeared out of thin air. Those who survived the collision include Captain Ashland (George Kennedy); his second in command Captain Marshall (Richard Crenna); Marshall’s wife Margaret (Sally Ann Howes) and their two children (Jennifer McKinney, Danny Higham); Crewman Nick (Nick Mancuso) and his girlfriend Lori (Victoria Burgoyne); an elderly widow named Sylvia (Kate Reid); and ship’s entertainer Jackie (Saul Rubinek). Together, this ragtag group climbs aboard the boat that hit them, which appears to be an abandoned World War II-era German warship. The survivors make the best of the situation, searching for food and a radio to call for help, all the while wondering what happened to the crew of this ominous vessel. 31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN — DAY 5: WOLF CREEK (2005) — BY SAL ROMA Posted on October 5, 2019 byproducer

*THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS SPOILERS -------------------------TITLE: WOLF CREEK
Country: Australia
Year: 2005
Director: Greg McLean Back in January 2006, my college roommates and I decided to head off to the movie theater on a spur of the moment sort of choice. We didn’t have any idea what movie we would end up watching, but since it was already after dark, if we wanted to go do something, we’d have to pick something quick. Without looking it up, I couldn’t tell you what was in the theater in that first week of 2006, but once we saw that a horror movie was playing, that was the easy pick. Sitting down in the theater to watch _Wolf Creek_, I knew absolutely nothing about the film or what to expect. Upon reflection, I feel as if that was one of the main reasons why I ended up loving the movie. Since I didn’t know anything about the film, I didn’t know what the threat was going to be. At best, maybe there’d be wolves? It’s right there in the title! My lack of awareness in the movie plays in nicely with director/writer, Greg McLean, storytelling. There’s a long build-up until the true threat emerges. At a gas station, our three future victims have a run in with a local which teases the idea that the local may have decided to go after them to become the antagonist. Once the victims reach _Wolf Creek_, the location of a long ago meteorite crash, they spend the night, only to learn the next day that their watches have stopped working and their car is equally dead. This is where the tease of the movie possibly being an alien-based film was started. Up until the reveal of the true threat, _Wolf Creek_ being an alien film was my best guess at what the sub-genre would end up becoming. Even when Mick first shows up in his trusty blue pick-up truck, the victims are initially concerned about the bright light in the pure darkness. Ben even speculates on whether or not the light could be Aliens! Although the movie never explains why the watches stopped working, the fact that the car was already such a cheap hunk of junk dismisses any need to explain what truly happened to the car. Was it sabotage or did the car just die on them? It doesn’t matter because either works justfine.

*THE FOLLOWING REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ------------------------- TITLE: THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGECountry: Italy
Year: 1970
Director: Dario Argento I imagine that every horror fan has a small collection of notable movies that they just hadn’t gotten around to watching for whatever reason. For me, I feel as if the most notable Italian horror that I had never watched was Argento’s debut film. _The Bird with the Crystal Plumage_ (1970) first appeared on my radar back in 2001 when I picked up my second ever issue of Fangoria magazine. Issue #206 featured a pretty lengthy article looking at Italian horror throughout the years. It became one of my favorite issues due to how valuable this information was to me as I started to expand my horror watching beyond just the well known American releases. Of course, being Argento’s first film and one that is often cited as not so much creating the Giallo sub-genre, but rather popularizing it. Director: Taylor Sheridan___ _
_Vile_ (2012), a horror film directed by Taylor Sheridan, had popped up on various streaming services for me before. I’d always wavered over it but ultimately moved on. The poster, sparsely composed only of a dirty pair of pliers and the film’s title scrawled in red, would have appealed to a past version of myself: one where I had the stomach for extreme gore and torture and enjoyed seeking out the most “extreme” or “hardcore” horror that I could find. While my tastes for horror have changed, something about Vile made me really curious and, for the first day of October, I took the plunge. The setup is fairly simple and straightforward. Two couples are wrapping up a camping trip and heading home. There’s some minimal personal drama thrown in, but not so much as to make it feel slow or boring. Just enough to paint our characters in more than twodimensions.

------------------------- _The Mephisto Waltz_ (1971) is an occult-horror film directed by Paul Wendkos and starring Alan Alda, Jacqueline Bisset, Bradford Dillman and Curd Jurgens, who most viewers will remember as the Bond villain from _The Spy Who Loved Me. _It is a fairly slow burn but thanks to fine performances and a bonkers ending, _The Mephisto Waltz_ is worthtracking down.
Alda plays Myles Clarkson, a failed classical pianist turned journalist, with a beautiful wife (Bisset) and a precocious stepdaughter. Myles lands an interview with Duncan Ely (Jurgens), widely considered to be the greatest pianist in the world. Duncan abruptly stops the interview to admire Myles’ hands. The acclaimed musician soon pulls Myles and his family into his inner circle that includes his daughter Roxanne (Barbara Perkins) with whom he is obviously having an incestuous relationship and a wealthy cabal that appreciates the occult as much as Beethoven. ------------------------- _Outcast_ (2010) an Irish horror film directed by Colm McCarthy, hits the ground running; in the opening scenes, a man arrives at a trailer park and announces he’s ready to take on “the mission”. This man is then led inside, and subjected to what appears to be a very painful tattoo session, covering his entire torso in ancient insignias. At the same time, a woman rents a rundown apartment in a Scottish tenement, and during her first night there performs a ceremony where she chants in Gaelic, cuts a gash into her chest, and uses the blood to paint a symbol on the wall.
