NEW PATTERN- TISSNET 2016 Posted in New Pattern- TISSNET 2016by howtocracktiss
Some of you might be worried after hearing about the changes in exam pattern of TISSNET 2016. Exam is just a week away and it is not good to press panic button for any reason now. This post will give you some idea about what could be the probable exam pattern and some FREE tips to face these changes. APPROXIMATE BREAK UP of TISSNET could be – GK was important in TISSNET, now it is going to be very important. Even if you are 99%ler in any other entrance exam, work hard for GK even before you dream of getting into TISS. After all it is a social science institute and needs students who are more aware of different areas like polity, society, environment, history, economics, etc. TIPS TO FACE THE CHANGES- 1. It is not a good idea to start something new just a week before exam. Do a quick revision of GK from your best and most concisesources.
2. Because of MORE EMPHASIS ON GK, non-engineering applicants need not to worry about engineers getting advantage in Maths and English. We have already shared some of the important GK topics in How to crackTISSNET
post.
Thanks for thousands of views and responses about us being helpful inyour preparation.
3. LR is asked in almost all entrance exams and logical reasoning is a prerequisite at any important juncture in life. Practicing some commonly asked topics like syllogism, blood relationship, series, direction, sitting arrangements, odd man out, logical deductions, etc.will be helpful.
4. ADDITION OF DI is another important change in TISSNET 2016. DI is nothing but analysis of charts, graphs, tables and extracting desired information. This is one of the important qualities because at work you will come across lot of information, charts and figures. You should know how to interpret the figures and extract desired data from them in a short time. Practice some questions from pie chart, tables and line charts. Make sure you learn multiplication tables, cubes, squares, fractions and percentages. It helps a lot in DI and savescalculation time.
5. Instead of giving direct answer as one of the OPTIONS, there could be options to choose true-false statement or combination of right and wrong statement choice in GK. Eg. Style 1} Where was the first Buddhist Council held? a. Vaisali. b. Rajgriha. c. Magadha. d. Kosala. Style 2} Which of the following statements is true about the firstBuddhist Council?
A) It was convened by King Asoka during his coronation B) It was held in Rajgriha a. Only A b. Only B c. Both A and B. d.None of the above
6. The LENGTH of the passage given in the demo on TISS website is more than previously asked passages. Longer passages and the above mentioned changes can cause the overall paper to become lengthier than before. It is going to be a true test of your knowledge, confidence and time management. Those who know how to balance accuracy and time will have higher chances of going in next round. 7. After all if exam is easy then it is going to be easy for all and if it is difficult it is difficult for everyone. This isn’t the time to fret over new challenges. Put your best foot forward, keep studying as hard as you can and take the test with confidence. 8. Eat well and get some good sleep before you go for exam.ALL THE BEST!

THE DILEMMA OF BOOKS Posted in The dilemma of booksby howtocracktiss
Hola amigos! This is a new beginning on this blog. We thank you for your massive response! We have decided to formulate our next posts on the basis of queries and doubts raised by the majority of you so that we can reach out to the most of you. WE ARE PROMPT IN REPLYING AS PROMISE, BUT JUST IN CASE YOU DON’T GET A REPLY, IT MEANS WE HAVE SOMETHING BETTER FOR YOU. CHECK THE BLOG AND THERE WILL BE A DETAILED POST ANSWERING YOUR QUERIES. The Indian logic of books is – the fatter, the better. Considering the dynamic nature of the TISSNET exam, books can help you little. You have to understand that this isn’t a university exam but a COMPETITIVE exam wherein all your aptitudes are put to test. Still, there is a certain part of the exam which can be studied from books. If you are the kind, who needs big, fat books to get the ‘feel’ of studying hard, there are books you can refer. Remember you just need the basics. You are not expected to be experts in subjects like economics, history, geography, mathematics etc. STATUTORY WARNING: FAT AND BULK IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH. AND FAT BOOKS CAN BE INJURIOUS TO YOUR MISSION TISS. Here is a list of subject-wise books and smart alternatives to optimize your preparations for TISS entrance exam. History: History is basically divided into three phases Ancient and Medieval: Use IGNOU BA HISTORY or NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF OPEN SCHOOL NOTES which are readily available online Modern: Read OLD NCERT TEXTBOOK OF MODERN INDIA BY BIPAN CHANDRA. It is concise and the language is lucid. Not too bulky yet adequate. Geography: You basically just need to know Indian Physical Geography. Read NCERT NEW EDITION INDIA, PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY CLASS XI TEXTBOOK Indian Polity and Constitution: You might be asked to read the _Bibles_ by M LAXMIKANTH OR P M BAKSHI. DON’T! It’s too much for TISSNET and meant for UPSC aspirants. Just surf the net for apps or readymade notes for Indian polity which you find suitable. Economics: DON’T even try to go the DUTT AND SUNDARAM way. The SPECIAL ECONOMICS ISSUE OF PRATIYOGITA DARPAN is the way to go! It consists of economic concepts, international organizations and recentdevelopments.
Science: You can read NCERT NEW EDITION SCIENCE TEXTBOOKS FROM 7-10. Otherwise, you can again resort to Google baba to find some good readymade science and technology notes. Society and Social issues: The understanding of contemporary society best comes from regular newspaper reading. A very good book to study this is SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN INDIA – RAM AHUJA. This might even prove helpful during your PIT. Current affairs: Again you MUST absolutely resort to NEWSPAPERS for this. You can buy any YEAR BOOK – MANORAMA or PEARSON. There is little difference between them. You may refer to INDIA YEAR BOOK, but its too huge! Pick what you like! Maths and Logical Reasoning: Most popularly used books are: ‘HOW TO PREPARE QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE FOR CAT’ BY ARUN SHARMA ‘QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE’ BY RS AGGARWAL YOU CAN ALSO REFER ANY MBA ENTRANCE MATERIAL FOR QUANTITATIVE APTITUDELanguage Ability
WREN & MARTIN’S HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH GRAMMAR OR NORMAN LEWIS – ‘WORD POWER MADE EASY’ (If you have a LOT of time) PROFICIENCY IN READING COMPREHENSION SIMPLIFYING THE ‘PASSAGE’ FOR YOU BY AJAY SINGH OBJECTIVE ENGLISH FOR COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION BY HARI MOHAN PRASAD Here’s what all book’s you can refer. We hope you all act smart than as beasts-of-burden.Happy studying!

TISS FAQS

by
howtocracktiss
* WHAT IS THE NATURE OF EACH STAGE OF THE EXAM?Stage I-
All the candidates first appear for the National entrance test (TISSNET). There are 100 QUESTIONS to be solved in 100 MINUTES. There is NO NEGATIVE MARKING OR SECTIONAL CUTOFF. The 3 SECTIONS are– * ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (30 QUESTIONS, 30 MARKS) * MATHS AND LOGICAL REASONING (30 QUESTIONS, 30 MARKS) * AND GENERAL AWARENESS (40 QUESTIONS, 40 MARKS)- GK is a brand TISS demon which many aspirants are scared of but don’t worry we’ll take care of it for youStage II-
Based on the performance in the TISSNET, only short listed candidates are called for the PRE INTERVIEW TEST (PIT). PIT consists of ESSAY WRITING AND INTERVIEW. A few weeks before the PIT (in February) the shortlisted aspirants are asked to submit a DETAILED APPLICATION FORM (DAF). Write the DAF carefully because most of the interview revolves around the DAF. * WHAT IS THE WEIGHTAGE TO EACH STAGE IN TISSNET?TISSNET- 100 marks
Essay writing- 50 marks PersonaL Interview- 75 marks At the end SCORE OUT OF 225 is converted into a score OUT OF 100 AND FINAL MERIT LIST is prepared. * HOW SHOULD WE PREPARE FOR TISSNET AND ESSAY WRITING?Read our posts-
https://howtocracktiss.wordpress.com/2015/10/11/how-to-crack-tissnet/ and https://howtocracktiss.wordpress.com/2015/11/08/how-to-crack-pit/ formore details.
* WHAT IS GENERALLY THE CUTOFF FOR TISSNET? The cutoff varies as per the difficulty level of the exam and the course you are interested in. TISSNET was pretty easy in 2013 so cutoff was high whereas in 2014 GK was mostly history based and many aspirants were stuck so cutoff came down. Cutoff for HRM was 76 (General) in 2015. HRM cutoff for different years is given below- * WHAT IS MORE SCORING – TISSNET, ESSAY OR INTERVIEW? You should try to maximize score in each section. You need to choose your best area and nail it in order to optimize your efforts. You should not ignore TISSNET though PIT (Essay+Interview) makes a lot of difference later. Interview is scoring part if you take the ‘required’ care while writing the DAF and prepare accordingly forthe interview.
* WHAT CRITERIA ARE CONSIDERED WHILE MARKING THE ESSAY? Quality of content, structure of essay and logical expression of ideas are some important factors. No one is expected to write a Shakespearan classic but it is advisable to avoid grammatical errors. (भावना समझ आनी चाहिए, लेकिन भावना बेह्नी नहीं चाहिए). * HOW IS THE ESSAY AND INTERVIEW CONDUCTED ON THE SAME DAY? In the morning shortlisted aspirants are asked to write an essay. Then the interviews start and TISS students conduct a nice gyan session for aspirants at the same time. The interview duration ranges from 10 to 30 minutes. The duration doesn’t matter but your body language, the manner of speaking and, of course, what you speak will be the make or break factors in the interview. * DO WE GET TO KNOW NAMES OF PANELISTS BEFORE OUR INTERVIEW? No. The panels generally consist of 3 faculty members of TISS. Now how to be smart right from the beginning of interview is another story. One on one communication will be better for that. * ARE OUR POINTS KNOCKED OFF IF WE ARE UNABLE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONBY THE INTERVIEWER?
No. It depends on how and what you say. It is not just a question of right or wrong. Be honest if you don’t know anything (failna aurfekna mana hai!).
* WHAT DRESS CODE SHOULD BE FOLLOWED FOR THE INTERVIEW? The atmosphere during the interview is fairly informal. TISS students will try to put you at ease. However, bear in mind that it is just to calm your nerves. Formal attire is advisable. * HOW MANY SEATS ARE THERE FOR SC/ST/OBC/OPEN? You just need 1 seat, why bother about others? It doesn’t make much difference; don’t panic with the number of seats available for your category. If you deserve and put in the right efforts, there is a place for you at the institution but reservations are as per GOI requirements: 15% for Scheduled Castes, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes and 27% for Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layers Persons With Disability: 3% seats as applicable will be considered in the Master’s Degree Programmes for PWD of which 1% each is reserved for persons with (a) Low Vision/Blindness, (b) Hearing Impairment, and (c) Learning Disability/Cerebral Palsy. Kashmiri Migrants: Subject to the GoI directives. * HOW TO FILL THE DAF? WHAT TO MENTION AND WHAT NOT TO? HOW TO MAKE IT HR/DS/CODP/MHA/PPG, ETC SPECIFIC? I HAVE A GAP IN EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE. I HAVE A POOR SCORE IN GRADUATION. I DON’T HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE TO WRITE DAF. WHAT TO DO? Every child is special! Writing a DAF requires personalized attention. Let your DAF speak how you are the best without going overboard andrevealing a lot.
* HOW IS THE TISS HYDERABAD CAMPUS, FACULTY AND PLACEMENTS? HRM ATTISS HYDERABAD?
Presently TISS Hyderabad operates from two different campuses, one adjacent to a scenic lake. These campuses are not as grand as the Mumbai campus but they have all the basic facilities. Almost all faculty members are either expert in their field or PhD holders. Placements for various courses are good enough. 2015-17 is the first batch of HRM Hyderabad. Batch size is kept small purposely to focus on quality education and more attention to each student. There are more credits in HRM Hyderabad and course content is also updated as per changing needs of industry. Important subjects like labor law and Industrial relation are there but additionally new subjects like HR analytics, social media in HR, etc are there which are not taught in many other HR schools. Hyderabad has many companies from different sectors, TISS HR (Hyderabad) is a good option for these companies to hire some of the best HR managers. Field work (known as Field Immersion Program) is the key and most attractive element of TISS which ensures good learning. It is same in this course also. For first business immersion program students went to some of the promising companies like Amazon, VVF, Cyient, ITC, Tata projects, Lodha group, RPG group, Deloitte, Piramal Group, Raymonds, Taj Hotels, ITW Signode, Dupont and international organizations like ICRISAT. * WHAT IS THE AVERAGE PACKAGE OF DIFFERENT COURSES IN TISS? HRM? Lot of MBA aspirants have this classic question in their mind what is the average package, highest package of the institute? Don’t we? But honestly we shouldn’t come here to earn good starting salary. It will be one of biggest mistake if we do so. We should come here to make good careers. When you come to TISS you prove that you are one of the talented minds in the country; you are anyway going get good salary. What we do with that talent is important! TISS and life have more beautiful things for us than money… 15. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR HR ASPIRANTS IN TISS? TISS offers two MA and two postgraduate executive programs related to HR. Admission process for executive programs is different than that of MA program. Visit http://www.tiss.edu/ for more information. TISS HR aspirants can choose to take admission in any of the followingprograms-
* MA in HRM & LR (TISS Mumbai) * MA in HRM (TISS Hyderabad)- This course was closed in Dec 2016 due to ‘some unavoidable circumstances’ (as quoted by TISS in thenotification).
* Executive Postgraduate Diploma in HRM (Mumbai) * Executive Postgraduate Diploma in Organizational Development and Change (Mumbai+being offered from some more locations)howtocracktiss

HOW TO CRACK PIT?
Posted in How to crack PIT?by
howtocracktiss
If you use proper study material, take enough mocks with careful analysis and pay attention to GK it is not difficult to crack TISSNET. We have written about it in detail in the post- https://howtocracktiss.wordpress.com/2015/10/11/how-to-crack-tissnet/ Once you crack TISSNET you will realize that picture abhi baki hai! TISSNET is more of a hygiene factor (Organizational Behavior term). A very high score may not seem to be a big deal in the beginning, but it can be your life-changing factor when the final merit list istabulated.
After TISSNET, the shortlisted applicants are asked to write a DAF (Detailed Application Form). For many aspirants, writing the DAF and preparing for PIT/PI is more of a self-exploration process. Instead of looking at the DAF as just a form, you should reflect intently on why you are taking a particular course and your expectations from that course. A post-graduate degree is like the last chance to take further studies or change career track that’s why choose your course wisely. Placement can be the motive to pursue a course but the intent to pursue a course like TISS HRM must emerge from more solid andintrinsic reasons.
The interviews will be aspirant and DAF specific. Let’s get into the basics and think about why you have applied for a particular course? Why TISS? Why this course after graduation in _XYZ_? Read basics of the course you have applied for and its main subjects. E.g. If you are an HR aspirant, read about trade unions, motivational theories, etc. which shall feature in your course. Spend some time (over the year) reading various books and thinking about them. You might be asked to talk about any recently read book. Reading different news related to society, politics, economy and business is very important. It will help you in TISSNET GK section, writing essay and interview too. Reading any daily newspaper is sufficient, focus more on the editorial and special columns. Try to practice essay writing or make points of some important topics. Brush up your basics of graduation if you are a fresher. Experienced candidates might be asked to correlate work experience with the course they have applied to. Read about professors of your course, their names, papers they have presented, etc. Pay attention to your dressing and other manners. If you enter the room without taking permission, hit the door hard or sit very relax. If you create a sloppy first impression, then even god can’t help you. Interviews typically last for 10 to 30 minutes. Mostly a panel has 3 members but it can change. There is no direct relation between the duration of the interview and selection of the candidate, the content and relevance of what you speak in the interview matters the most. You should make the panel curious about your life story when they ask you to talk about yourself. But don’t make any story just to seek their attention. They are not interested in knowing how many girlfriends you had or how you impressed your boss. Make a timeline of important events in your life and a checklist of the points you want to deliver. This is the opportunity for you to take the interview in your area of interest. The Panel could ask many questions based on your DAF or your life story. Lying or making cow stories in the interview is strictly prohibited! There could be a few questions about your knowledge of TISS and your understanding of different social problems. If you don’t know the answer just say- sorry I don’t know. Just be yourself. Study well and practice for PIT. All the best! HOW TO CRACK TISSNET? Posted in How to crack TISSNET?by
howtocracktiss
The selection of candidates for different programmes happens in two stages and has three components of assessment. All candidates appear for the NATIONAL ENTRANCE TEST (TISSNET). Based on the performance in the TISSNET examination, only short listed candidates are called for the Pre Interview Test (PIT). In this post we’ll focus only on entrance exam i.e. TISSNET. Difficulty level is not that great as TISS wants students with no exposure to have the equal chance too (but this results in very high cut-offs). Typically aspirants have to attempt 100 questions in 100 minutes. From last few years there is no negative marking and three sections are there- 1. ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (30 QUESTIONS)– This section has RC passages with most questions being direct. Besides RC, logical arrangement of paragraphs, vocabulary based fill-in-the-blanks, analogies, sentence correction, essence/summary of a paragraph are the kind of questions that have traditionally appeared in this section. Keep daily habit of reading something related to different fields. E.g. Education, Politics, Biology, Economy, History, etc. Identify the crux of the passage, mark important words and refer dictionary for unknown words. Try to improve reading speed. You can go through other sites which will give you break up of questions according to different category. But searching/reading too much info isn’t that useful, just keep in mind these inputs and FOCUS ON STUDY! 2. MATHS AND LOGICAL REASONING (35 QUESTIONS)– Practice commonly asked topics like Venn Diagrams, Ratios and Proportions, time and work, quadrilaterals, numbers, averages, profit and loss, mathematical series, percentage, permutation and combination, DI, visual reasoning, etc. Refer RS Agarwal or any other notes with AVERAGE DIFFICULTY level. Calculation speed is the key! Learn TABLES, SQUARES, CUBES, FRACTIONS, etc. You can expect 5-7 difficult questionsin this section.
3. MOST IMPORTANT- GENERAL AWARENESS (30 QUESTIONS)- This is where many of the top percentile getters of other exams fail! FORGET TISS IF YOU DON’T IMPROVE YOUR GK! TISS really wants to have different blood in the institution and they make it sure through this section. Earlier the questions used to be predominantly from the field of Social Sciences only while they cover concepts from a wider range of topics now but there is a COMMON TREND in the kind of questions beingasked.
From last few years around 18-20 questions are being asked on STATIC GK– longest-biggest-highest type questions, states-dances, arts, culture, books & authors, laws and rights, constitution of India and recent amendments, important organizations (founding years, HO locations, heads), government schemes, etc. Also go through basics of history, geography, science and economics. Remaining 10-12 questions are based on news from LAST 8-10 MONTHS (CURRENT GK)- Recent Mergers & Acquisitions, obituaries, socio-political appointments, sport persons, important sports/events/tournaments and their slogan-logo-locations, budget, elections, awards, etc. After reading this you might think it is too much to go through all this but believe me it is important and helps a lot during ANY INTERVIEW. You just need to keep making note of anything relevant you read in a SMART WAY. E.g. create separate word files for above topics and keep adding information regularly. For other GK topics just Google- list of M&A/ obituaries/ Sport events, etc in the year so and so… Take as many MOCKS as you can, solve old TISSNET papers, it will boost your confidence. We will also provide some similar test papers. Don’t be overconfident because of easy nature of TISSNET or don’t search/ask for cut-off! Your target should be terribly score high! Practice will give you understanding of the required speed, strong and weak areas. Keep reading newspapers like Indian Express/TOI and ET. Keep adding one liner news in your word file, Google around those news to memorize important info. Last moment option could be directly reading monthly GK (static and current) snippets provided by us but it is very difficult to memorize everything in last few days that’s why we don’t recommend this option. Daily reading will help you in getting comfortable with social issues, forming opinions, changes in laws, HR and other development related news. This helps in GK section as well as PIT because you get just a month to prepare for PIT and you have lot to read! (and interviews of other B-schools in between).
