The BASIC Exam Content Outline was developed by a committee of the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) for the purpose of preparing the BASIC Examination. The BASIC Exam is assessment of fundamental knowledge and skills. It is intended as an evaluation of residents nearing completion of their first year of RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS Residents and Fellows. Dermatology residents train for three years in an ACGME-accredited dermatology residency training program in the United States or in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada dermatology residency training program in Canada, following completion of one year of approved postgraduate training.ABSENCE GUIDELINES

Any departure from completing 36 continuous months of fulltime dermatology training, for example time lost for a medical leave of absence, should be documented and fully justified to the Board through the resident evaluation forms filed annually by theprogram director.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE BOARD CERTIFIED? Certification indicates that the specialty board determined, based on the criteria then in effect, that the diplomate possessed the education, training, experience and knowledge required to be a specialist at the time the certificate was awarded. It cannot assess a physician’s knowledge, skills and experience after the certificateis awarded.
