2021 ANNUAL MEETING
This embed will serve content from youtube.com. While we couldn't gather in person, we still celebrated our shared accomplishments at the 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting over a conversation with Angela Davis, musical performances from Ben Sollee and Scott T Smith, and poetry from Tytianna Wells. BREONNA'S LAW
Breonna Taylor was a 26-year-old Black woman who was fatally shot during a “no-knock” raid in Louisville, KY, on March 13, 2020. That night, a group of officers entered Breonna Taylor’s home, which she shared with her partner, Kenneth Walker. Walker did not hearpolice make an
THE KENTUCKY GENERAL ASSEMBLY MUST STOP ATTACKS ON FREE Lawmakers are pushing two bills that would weaponize the criminal legal system to silence a population crying out for justice. Both House Bill 479 and Senate Bill 211 would be used to threaten protesters with excessive prosecution, deterring them from exercising their right to free speech. PUBLIC DOLLARS FOR PRIVATE SCHOOLS (NEW LAW) House Bill 563 will take public school dollars and give them to private schools. This will reduce funding by $25M annually, harm Kentucky students, and reduce transparency around how your tax dollars are spent. It also paves the way for school vouchers statewide. ATTACK ON PROTEST AND SPEECH (FAILED) Senate Bill 211 is a direct attack on constitutionally protected speech and will stifle dissent. This bill was so extreme it garnered national media attention. This blatant attack on free speech failed, but we expect similar legislation to return next year. SB211 is a direct response to the 2020 racial justice protests. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: DEMONSTRATIONS AND PROTESTS IN KENTUCKY The First Amendment protects many forms of expression, including the right to free speech, participating in demonstrations like protests and marches, leafleting, chanting, drumming and dancing. It also protects "symbolic speech," e.g., wearing T-shirts with messages, carrying signs, sculptures or LGBTQ FAIRNESS (FAILED) LGBTQ Fairness (Failed) – HB130/HB116. Fairness would protect LGBTQ Kentuckians from discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodation. We look forward to working with the Fairness Campaign in 2022 to take Fairness protection statewide. These bills would amend the Kentucky Civil Rights Act to create statewide anti-discriminationKETURAH HERRON
