To help you plan for your trip, we have listed below in alphabetical order all of the major trailheads in the High Peaks Wilderness, what peaks are most accessible for day-hikers, and other important info you need to know about each parking area.Additionally, we have included four tips for parking in the area to AMPERSAND MOUNTAIN HIKE A Classic Day Hike. Elevation: 3352 ft. Ascent: 1775 ft. Round-Trip Distance: 5.2 miles. Location: Off Route 3 between Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake. Region: Lake Placid/High Peaks. TREKKING POLES: ESSENTIAL TOOL OR SILLY AFFECTATION This is the principle behind exercise equipment such as the NordicTrack® and ellipticals, which incorporate upper extremity activity with lower body exercise. (Trekking poles may have originated in Finland, where “Nordic walking” with poles is a popular aerobic exercise.) Most people use poles for musculoskeletal benefits. ADK TEEN AND YOUNG ADULT PROGRAMS As ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) continues to monitor the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), ADK has developed the following risk management protocols for in-person programs which include our day hike and trailless backpacking series. HIGH PEAKS INFORMATION CENTER Before heading out into the High Peaks Wilderness, stop by ADK’s High Peaks Information Center (HPIC). The HPIC is a year-round resource for hikers, backpackers, snowshoers, and cross-countryskiers.

The Kids on the Trail!Hiking with Children in the Adirondack guidebook offers tips, and detailed information about all 71 hikes, treks, walks, strolls and opportunities to explore and RESPONSIBLE HIKING DURING MUD SEASON Mud season is when a lot of damage can be inflicted on hiking trails. This is especially true in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks, whose sensitive ecosystems and erosion-prone soils are easily degraded. Between mid-April and early June in the Adirondacks, warming temperatures, rain and snowmelt create adverse conditions during mudseason.
