2021 Annual Meeting. The theme of the Society's 133rd annual meeting is Natural States: Environment, Politics, and Tradition . The deadline for proposals passed on May 2. Proposals are reviewed by a committee of folklorists who live in the region hosting the meeting. AFS ANNUAL MEETING PLANS ADAPT TO 2021 NEEDS AFS Annual Meeting Plans Adapt to 2021 Needs. We are adapting our 2021 Annual Meeting plans as we navigate the present moment of the COVID-19 pandemic and its ripple effects on our programs and institutions. We are proceeding with both an in-person gathering in Harrisburg, and a virtual meeting for those who cannot attend in person. PAST ANNUAL MEETINGS Past Annual Meetings. The American Folklore Society has been holding meetings since 1889, one year after the Society's founding. We have met every year except for 1942 and 1943, in the midst of World War II, when many activities of all kinds were curtailed.
