A BRIEF HISTORY OF AI A Brief History of AI Introduction. The intellectual roots of AI, and the concept of intelligent machines, may be found in Greek mythology. Intelligent artifacts appear in literature since then, with real (and fraudulent) mechanical devices actually demonstrated to behave with some degree of intelligence. QUESTIONNAIRE & OPINION SURVEY The most striking result is the sheer number of respondents. In our 2020 survey, which reached the same audience, we had 1,239 responses. This year, we had a total of 5,154. After eliminating 1,580 respondents who didn't complete the survey, we're left with 3,574 responses--almost three times as many as last year.* TO NOW | AITOPICS

------------------------- PARKINSON'S, AI AND ME #artificialintelligenceabout 2 hours ago For two weeks recently I got into a steady routine. At 10:30 each morning, I would sit at my kitchen table, strap three devices containing sensors to my right arm, and switch on a tablet computer. Then I would spend 20 minutes going through a series of exercises monitored by a man who popped up in a window on the screen. The results of my endeavours will, I hope, help millions of people like me dealing with Parkinson's disease. My daily routine was part of a medical trial run by engineers from Imperial College and a start-up company they have founded, in collaboration with a consultant neurologist at London's Charing Cross Hospital. health & medicine , neurology , parkinson , (11Â more...) #artificialintelligence Industry: Health & Medicine>Â Therapeutic Area

------------------------- IBM PARTNERS WITH U.K. ON $300M QUANTUM COMPUTING RESEARCH INITIATIVE #artificialintelligenceabout 2 hours ago The U.K. government and IBM this week announced a five-year £210 million ($297.5 million) artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing collaboration, in the hopes of making new discoveries and developing sustainable technologies in fields ranging from life sciences to manufacturing. The program will hire 60 scientists, as well as bringing in interns and students to work under the auspices of IBM Research and the U.K.'s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) at the Hartree Centre in Daresbury, Cheshire. The newly formed Hartree National Centre for Digital Innovation (HNCDI) will "apply AI, high performance computing (HPC) and data analytics, quantum computing, and cloud technologies" to advance research in areas like materials development and environmental sustainability, IBM said in a statement. "Artificial intelligence and quantum computing have the potential to revolutionize everything from the way we travel to the way we shop. They are exactly the kind of fields I want the U.K. to be leading in," U.K. Science Minister Amanda Solloway said. health & medicine , immunology , quantum computing ,(19 more...)

------------------------- CONNECTIONISM - SWITCHING AND FAST TRANSFORMS #artificialintelligenceabout 2 hours ago If you are a connectionist (and who isn't?) you should know what the terms switch, connect and disconnect mean. A switch when on gives: zero volts in zero volts out, 1 volt in 1 volt out, 2 volts in 2 volts out. If you graph that out in a uniform way you get a 45 degree line. The function form is f(x) x and the meaning is connect. A switch when off gives only zero volts out. artificial intelligence , neural network , switching and fast transform, (14Â more...)

------------------------- 58 RESOURCES TO HELP GET STARTED WITH DEEP LEARNING ( IN TF ) #artificialintelligenceabout 2 hours ago Artificial Neural Networks are systems inspired by biological neurons and are used to solve complex problems, as they have the unique ability to approximate functions, which map the inputs to their labels. The following topic which DL folks call "backpropagation" is a serial killer for many ML beginners. It roams around with creepy weapons like partial derivatives, chain rule, so beginners with weak mathematics are advised. Backpropagation is used to optimize the parameters of ML models, which aims to find a minimum for the given cost function. Having a strong understanding of how backpropagation works under the hood, is essential in deep learning. artificial intelligence , deep learning , neural network ,(2Â more...)

I have left out details that aren't necessary for understanding the intuition behind the approach and its working. However, I would definitely recommend that you read the paper as well. ------------------------- DEEP FAKE GEOGRAPHY? WHEN GEOSPATIAL DATA ENCOUNTER ARTIFICIALINTELLIGENCE
#artificialintelligenceabout 4 hours ago The developing convergence of Artificial Intelligence and GIScience has raised a concern on the emergence of deep fake geography and its potentials in transforming human perception of the geographic world. Situating fake geography under the context of modern cartography and GIScience, this paper presents an empirical study to dissect the algorithmic mechanism of falsifying satellite images with non-existent landscape features. To demonstrate our pioneering attempt at deep fake detection, a robust approach is then proposed and evaluated. Our proactive study warns of the emergence and proliferation of deep fakes in geography just as "lies" in maps. We suggest timely detections of deep fakes in geospatial data and proper coping strategies whennecessary.
