UNDERSTANDING IDEAS
Understanding Verbal Concepts. Success in school depends upon the firm mastery of a great number of concepts. Concepts are groupings of facts, attributes, steps in a process, or ideas that commonly go together. The development of concept formation serves as a kind of mental shorthand. Concepts allow the student to organize issues orideas in a
THINKING WITH NUMBERS an understanding of the relationships involved in numeric operations (such as the place value concept behind borrowing and carrying) the ability to make generalizations (as in the application of mathematical learning to everyday situations) This chart describes important skills related to understanding math concepts: Necessary SubSkills. UNDERSTANDING MATH CONCEPTS An important goal of math instruction is for students to see the relevance of math concepts to everyday life. A student’s progression from a basic understanding of a concept to a particular level of competency in applying that concept in real-life situations is strongly influenced by abilities in attention, memory and higher orderthinking.
UNDERSTANDING MATH CONCEPTS In developing an awareness of mathematical concepts, students must engage their nonverbal thinking skills. Nonverbal thinking involves the use of spatial and visual processes to learn or think about aproblem or concept.

LANGUAGE: WORD DECODING AND UNDERSTANDING OF SYNTAX AND Semantics relates to the meaning of words. Initially, when reading, students deal with concrete objects, information, and meaning. Reading comprehension is made more complex as students must construct meaning from concepts and information beyond their direct sensory experience, such as with abstract concepts or technical vocabulary. UNDERSTANDING VERBAL CONCEPTS Verbal concepts are those that are readily explained, interpreted, and elaborated with language. As a student develops conceptual understanding, he/she is aided by the ability to talk about features of the concept, describe a concept in his/her own words, provide an explanation for the concept, etc. UNDERSTANDING VERBAL CONCEPTS To understand is more than to "know." That is, the ability to understand depends upon a foundation of conceptual knowledge; yet it is also depends on the ability to interpret, generalize, and to apply concepts appropriately. Finally, the growth of conceptual understanding depends upon a student's higher order thinking abilityto know when he

But don't take our word for it; see what others are saying about this breakthrough book. GETTING THOUGHTS ON PAPER For example, students may need to decide what to write about, develop a topic, research a topic, produce original thoughts, elaborate on ideas, use prior knowledge, think critically, and apply new and learned concepts. All of these skills can help a student with generating organizing their ideas when writing. This chart describessome important
