The American Academy elects members in thirty sections that are organized within five classes, including the sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts, and business. While many Americans experience legal issues at some point in their lives, not everyone has access to the legal assistance that they need. WOMEN’S UNDERREPRESENTATION IN THE U.S. CONGRESS Women’s elective office-holding stands at an all-time high in the United States. Yet women are far from parity. This underrepresentation is surprising given that more women than men vote. Gender–as a feature of both society and politics–has always worked alongside race to determine which groups possess the formal and informal resources and opportunities critical for winning elective office. PUBLIC LIBRARY REVENUE, EXPENDITURES, AND FUNDING SOURCES In 2018, per capita public library expenditures were $41.10, 32% higher than in 1995 (Indicator V-18a; all amounts are given in 2018 dollars).1 Growth in expenditures over this period occurred in two distinct phases (from 1995 to 2002 and again from 2005 to 2009) separated by a plateau.The 2009 zenith in per capita expenditures was followed by several years of decline and then stasis. THE DEMOCRATIC THREAT TO CAPITALISM Jerry Z. Muller is professor of history at the Catholic University of America. He is the author of such publications as “Adam Smith in His Time and Ours: Designing the Decent Society” (1993), “Conservatism: An Anthology of Social and Political Thought from David Hume to the Present” (1997), and “The Mind and the Market: Capitalism in Modern European Thought” (2002). IMMIGRATION & LANGUAGE DIVERSITY IN THE UNITED STATES While the United States historically has been a polyglot nation characterized by great linguistic diversity, it has also been a zone of language extinction in which immigrant tongues fade and are replaced by monolingual English within a few generations. In 1910, 10 million people reported a mother tongue other than English, notably German, Italian, Yiddish, and Polish. PROGRAM ASSOCIATE: AMERICAN POLITICAL ECONOMY AND THE The American Academy of Arts and Sciences seeks a Program Associate within the “American Institutions, Society, and the Public Good” program area to play a central coordinating role in the Academy’s efforts surrounding its new Commission on the American Political Economy and the Public Good.
