THE AFRICAN DIASPORA CINEMA FESTIVAL PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED The African Diaspora Cinema Festival celebrates its return to the big screen from 23-26 June. Initiated in 2013 by filmmaker Fide Dayo, the festival aims to overcome geographical limitations and hierarchies that categorisations such as ‘African film’ or ‘African cinema’ often entail. Instead, ADCF presents films from and about Africa and its Diaspora that focus 'UNUSUAL SUSPECTS' AT THE AFRICAN ARTISTS' FOUNDATION ‘Unusual Suspects’ celebrates the unique visual dialects of 11 contemporary African artists from Nigeria, South Africa, Ivory Coast and Lesotho Contemporary artists from Africa and its diaspora connect through a non-linear timeline that draws inspiration from oral tradition, precolonial symbolic heritage, cultural symbols, fashion twenty-first century’s internet culture and personal AFRICAN ART AS PHILOSOPHY Art is the evidence of African philosophy and, conversely, we do not attain full comprehension of African art without understanding the metaphysics from which it proceeds. This metaphysics, to present it in a word, is a metaphysics of rhythm which, according to Senghor, is at the core of African thought and experience. BEADWORK / INVENTING "AFRICAN TRADITIONS" IN SOUTH AFRICA Inventing “African Traditions” in South Africa Many South Africans like to talk about their traditions, and their cultures, as specific to their particular ethno-linguistic group (for example Zulu, Xhosa, or Pedi). Yet many also feel them to be general enough (if they are black South Africans of indigenous African origin) to be considered“African”.1
ONE THOUSAND VOICES / OWANTO BERGER / FGM SURVIVORS BREAK One Thousand Voices is an audio art installation which stands in solidarity with those affected by FGM and breaks the taboo of silence surrounding the issue. The project is a collection of audio testimonies from FGM survivors from all over the world and captures the global magnitude of the practice. It includes countries such asKenya, Tanzania

Brendon Bell-Roberts spoke with Danda Jaroljmek about their organisation, their recent auction and explores BEADWORK / INVENTING "AFRICAN TRADITIONS" IN SOUTH AFRICA Inventing “African Traditions” in South Africa Many South Africans like to talk about their traditions, and their cultures, as specific to their particular ethno-linguistic group (for example Zulu, Xhosa, or Pedi). Yet many also feel them to be general enough (if they are black South Africans of indigenous African origin) to be considered“African”.1
