Hi! I’m Elaine, a textile designer, marketer, and life-long lover of college. I created art.college.life. to guide art and design students and their parents as they navigate the college search process. When I was a kid we’d take family vacations every summer, mostly driving somewhere in the U.S. Wherever we went, my dad made sure CONSULTING – ART. COLLEGE. LIFE. I often write and talk about fit; encouraging families to find colleges that have the right blend of academics, environment, and community to meet their needs.Cost, distance from home, and comfort need to be included as well. The key is to weigh all of these – mostly tangible – elements until you come up with the place that just feels right.That’s logic transitioning into a gut instinct. College Completion, funded in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is designed to provide comparative graduation results for institutions across the country. Since I seldom find national rankings and listings that let me easily compare art schools, I DESIGN THINKING: THINKING DESIGN Art and design require strategy. Consider Industrial Design (ID); in order to successfully design and create a new product, or redesign an existing one, it’s necessary to understand the environment in which the product will exist. Variables such as size, location and specialty are the obvious standouts, but delving deeper and learning more about each program brings out the true distinctions. Colleges feel the same anticipation. Warmer weather brings spring flowers and students engaged in outdoor activities, resulting in picturesque scenes just as recruitment season kicks into gear for next year’s freshmen. WHERE TO FIND THE NEXT GENERATION OF DESIGNERS If you haven’t caught it yet – it’s not too late. The “no’s” can be CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY: SCHOOL OF DESIGN Touring Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in autumn is a great idea. I was fortunate to visit last week when the trees were starting to sparkle in all their autumn glory.
