Although it had long been known that there was a medieval building in this location, the house was not officially recorded as medieval until 1980, and it was not until the site was sold for redevelopment that the extent of the medieval structurebecame clear.
THE HISTORICAL RECORD A Plan for the Reconstruction of Barley Hall. The Priors of Nostell. Thomas de Dereford, Prior of Nostell from 1337 to 1372, arranged for the building of a hostel in York in 1360. The Priors of Nostell were prebendary canons, senior clerics, at York Minster and as such were expected to attend ceremonies, services and business meetings in thecity.

Magic & Mystery is a new exhibition at Barley Hall that explores the often fine line between science, religion and magic in medieval society. Galleries invite you to explore the role of magic in the everyday lives of people living in the Middle Ages. THE THREE KINGS AT MAGIC & MYSTERY Gold, frankincense and myrrh the Three Kings and their gifts were an evocative part of the Christmas story in the 15th century, believed by medieval thinkers to invoke protection, magic and cures for disease. At Barley Hall this Christmas, explore how magic infiltrated this religious time in the middle ages, whilst discovering the fine line SHAKING HANDS WITH THE PAST Shaking Hands with the Past.
