While still in his teens, he joined his sister in Boston, where he learned carpentry. The high-peaked roof is a cold-climate invention, devised to liberate structures from the heavy weight of snow accumulations. Anyone who has traveled in northern Europe will have seen numerous steep roofs in practically every town. They purchased a Queen Anne cottage newly built by William C. Bissell, a contractor who also dealt in real estate and insurance at 2050 Ashby Avenue, near Shattuck. BAHA :: BUILDER-ARTIST A.H. At the turn of the last century, wharves, lumber mills, farms, breweries, tanneries, and Victorian residences dotted West Berkeley. The largest employer south of University Avenue was the Standard Soap Company, which had occupied half a block between the bay shore and Third Street north of BERKELEY OBSERVED :: PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION 1873–1946 Berkeley Observed.
