THE MIST (2007)
I’ve got my eye on you, Frank Darabont. After unsheathing that flaming terd of racism known as The Green Mile, I’d think you’d be on your best behavior for fear of bringing the wrath of Al Sharpton’s pressed hair down upon you. So imagine my surprise upon seeing The Mist. Let’s set the stage: oneTHE STAND (1994)
Stephen King loves mystical darkies! In particular, he’s partial to the Southern, rustic, uneducated variety (see also The Green Mile). I half expected that in The Shawshank Redemption, Morgan Freeman would sprout wings or take the form of a bucket of water, but King decided to exercise “restraint” (whatever). NECRONOMICON: BOOK OF THE DEAD (1994) The third and final tale in this gory H.P. Lovecraft-inspired horror anthology is intriguing in that it revolves around an interracial couple in Sarah (Signy Coleman) and Paul (the fun-to-say Obba Babatunde). They’re partners on the Philadelphia police force, and apparently Paul’s been slipping Sarah his nightstick, because she comes up pregnant. Race is never GANJA & HESS (AKA BLOOD COUPLE) (1973) Ganja & Hess is an acquired taste (pun intended), but for those who acquire it, it’s a vivid, stylish, introspective trip. It’s also utterly weird and confusing in that art-house, experimental ’60s/’70s sort of way. The story revolves around Dr. Hess Green (Duane Jones of Night of the Living Dead fame), who takes on a new PSYCHIC KILLER (1975) Pre-dating the similarly themed Australian cult film Patrick by a few years, Psychic Killer has only one major black character (a not-quite-angelic Della Reese has a throwaway scene), and he dies within the first 15 minutes, but there wouldn’t be a movie without him. And if there was, it would’ve been called Inept Wannabe Killer WOODS OF EVIL (2005) It’s been said time and time again that some movies are so bad, they’re good. While “good” wouldn’t be a word I’d associate with Woods of Evil (it is evil, after all), it’s pretty entertaining in its low-budget ineptitude.
