MACULAR DEGENERATION & CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19): TIPS FOR Coronavirus and Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration. If you have dry AMD, you should most likely postpone your AMD checkups unless you have a change in your vision that could indicate conversion to wet AMD. To check for this, use an Amsler grid once a week. To do this, keep your glasses on and check one eye at a time, closing the other eye. THE PROGRESSION OF WET AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION As many as 11 million people in the United States have some form of age-related macular degeneration. This number is expected to double to nearly 22 million by 2050. We're the leading nonprofit funder of research for the advanced form of macular degeneration. BrightFocus makes innovative science possible around the world— 1,625 research CATARACTS & AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, which then blocks light from reaching the retina. LESS COMMON AMD SYMPTOMS: DARK SPOTS, ON WHITE WALLS People with AMD are usually diagnosed during a routine eye exam when the eye doctor sees small white spots in the retina called drusen.Or, if they have advanced AMD, a person may notice a dark area or distortion in their central vision. However, there are other symptoms of AMD that are less noticeable or occur less commonly, but are worthknowing about.

Angle-closure glaucoma, the second most common type, is a largely inherited disorder caused by a too-narrow angle in the passageway where aqueous fluid would normally drain. This type of glaucoma may occur in two ways: The chronic type progresses slowly and, like open-angle glaucoma, can result in optic nerve damage. They can also be photographed with a retina camera or using an imaging device called optical coherence tomography (OCT), which shows a cross-section of the retina and underlying drusen.. THE PROGRESSION OF WET AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATIONPROGRESSION OF MACULAR DEGENERATION As many as 11 million people in the United States have some form of age-related macular degeneration. This number is expected to double to nearly 22 million by 2050. We're the leading nonprofit funder of research for the advanced form of macular degeneration. BrightFocus makes innovative science possible around the world— 1,625 research CAN MACULAR DEGENERATION BE REVERSED? Macular degeneration is an area of intensive research. The discovery of VEGF as an important driver of wet AMD, by American scientists supported by the NIH and private foundations, has led to improved vision in millions of patients. Future “bench to bedside” research will lead to better treatments to prevent and reverse AMD. FUTURE TREATMENTS FOR ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE: WHERE ARE THEY Volunteers are needed for hundreds of clinical research studies evaluating new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Some studies enroll people with AD; others seek healthy adults who don’t have AD but are at increased risk due to age, genetics, or other factors; and still others are recruiting totally healthy adults in order to learn more about how the brain changes with normal aging. QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN LOOKING FOR A LONG-TERM CARE The information provided here is a public service of the BrightFocus Foundation and should not in any way substitute for personalized advice of a qualified healthcare professional; it is not intended to constitute medical advice. INJECTIONS FOR WET MACULAR DEGENERATION: WHAT TO EXPECT Ten years ago, before injections for wet macular degeneration became available, most people lost much of their central vision. Now, thanks to medical research, injections with brolucizumab (Beovu®), aflibercept (Eylea®), ranibizumab (Lucentis®), or bevacizumab (Avastin®) can protect precious reading and driving vision in manypatients.
MEDICATIONS THAT MAY ADVERSELY AFFECT GLAUCOMA Narrow Angles and Angle-Closure Glaucoma What is Angle-Closure Glaucoma? Angle-closure glaucoma, the second most common type, is a largely inherited disorder caused by a too-narrow angle in the passageway where aqueous fluid would normally drain. This type of glaucoma may occur in two ways: The chronic type progresses slowly and, like open-angle glaucoma, can result in optic nerve damage. GLAUCOMA AND DIET: CAN FOODS LOWER OR RAISE EYE PRESSURE Caffeine and Alcohol. An often asked question is whether caffeine affects eye pressure and glaucoma. It is known that caffeine can cause a several point rise in eye pressure that lasts for at least 90 minutes. However, whether that increase is of concern is best addressed between the patient and their eye doctor. WHAT ARE THE STAGES OF FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA Late-Stage Frontotemporal Dementia. In the late stage, people with FTD look more similar to those whose dementia is due to Alzheimer’s disease. Both language and behavior are affected and memory deterioration often occurs as well. It may be necessary to have care 24 hours per day to assure safety and adequate care. BRIGHTFOCUS CHAT (LIVE AUDIO STREAM) The "Play" button will appear on the screen 15 to 20 minutes prior to Chat. BRIGHTFOCUS LAUDS FDA APPROVAL OF NEW ALZHEIMER’S DRUG The following statement was issued today by Stacy Pagos Haller, President and CEO of BrightFocus Foundation: BrightFocus, along with families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease across the nation and the world, welcomes the Food and Drug Administration’s decision allowing clinical use of aducanumab, to be marketed under the name Aduhelm, as a new drug believed to slow cognitive TAU BIOMARKER SHOWS PROMISE FOR USE IN BLOOD TEST FOR What: A potential blood test to diagnose AD and monitor its progression and response to treatments. Where: O’Conner et al, Plasma Phospho-tau181 in Pre-symptomatic and Symptomatic Familial Alzheimer’s Disease: A Longitudinal Cohort Study, Molecular Psychiatry, 2020; and also Moscoso et al, Longitudinal Associations of Blood Phosphorylated Tau181 and Neurofilament Light Chain with NATIONAL GLAUCOMA RESEARCH PROGRAM Program History. Since the National Glaucoma Research (NGR) program began in 1978, BrightFocus has awarded nearly $40 million to support research projects on the causes and potential prevention and treatment of this disease. NGR is currently supporting 42 biomedical researchprojects.
SUCCESSFUL CELL TRANSPLANTATION GIVES HOPE FOR NEW What: Researchers have reported the first successful attempt to transplant lab-grown retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into the eyes of mice. Based on this work in animal models, they estimate that humans with late-stage glaucoma could begin receiving vision-restoring transplants in thenext 10 years.

MACULAR DEGENERATION: HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUNGLASSES UVA can penetrate the cornea and reach the lens, where it is likely to contribute to cataract formation. Little UVA light can reach the retina, so it is less likely to contribute to AMD. In order to protect against UV light, purchase sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB. Wrap-around sunglasses will help block light coming THE PROGRESSION OF WET AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION As many as 11 million people in the United States have some form of age-related macular degeneration.
