Conservation. There are a total of 18,000 African penguin breeding pairs left in the wild. This is a dramatic fall in numbers since 1900 when an estimated 2 million birds could be found. This 97.5% drop in population means these penguins are now classified as Endangered. A number of factors have contributed to this rapid decline in numbers. CONSERVATION LECTURES Conservation lectures. Our conservation lectures usually take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 6pm in Bristol Zoo’s Conservation Education Centre (entrance on Guthrie Road open from 5.45pm). They are open to all interested people. The talks span a wide range of topics and usually have a strong focus on conservation-relevant research. WELCOME TO BRISTOL ZOO We have reopened! Please read our FAQs. Read our site rules. To ensure the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers, additional measures will be in place during your visit. Keep up to date.
