Air quality tends to be worse in cities than elsewhere in the country and is the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK, causing an estimated 40,000 deaths each year. Our research reveals that 40 UK cities and towns are at or exceed World Health Organisation air pollution limits and more than one in 19 deaths in these places are related to long READY TO RECOVER? CORONAVIRUS CASES IN ENGLAND’S CITIES AND LARGE TOWNS With 438 cases per 100,000 population, Blackburn is the city with the highest infection rate. It is followed by Manchester (130) and Huddersfield (117).. A total of 5 cities are now above the 100 cases per 100,00 population threshold. At the other end of the spectrum, Ipswich, Bournemouth and Plymouth have less than 10 cases per 100,000 population. Looking at the changes since last week THE PROBLEM OF REGIONAL INEQUALITY To illustrate the extent of these differences, the output per head of the South East during the first lockdown of the pandemic is similar to that of Wales in normal times (assuming the impact of the first lockdown at 35 per cent). 1 On top of that, recent research by Centre for Cities revealed that the economic impact of the pandemic is now making the task of levelling up these inequalities CONCLUSION | CENTRE FOR CITIES 05 Conclusion.
