DELIVERING SUCCESS AT THE LEADERS’ SUMMIT ON CLIMATE A credible US target should aim for at least 50% cuts below 2005 emissions levels by 2030, according to coalitions of American scientists, businesses and NGOs.The White House is reportedly considering a range of emissions cuts between 48-53%. The expectation is that other countries, such as Japan, South Korea, Canada, India, Indonesia and South Africa will also use the summit to announce CHINA’S 2060 CARBON NEUTRALITY TARGET: OPPORTUNITIES AND In late September, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases set its first long-term climate goal. China’s announcement that it would target carbon neutrality by 2060 elicited a huge response. Global efforts on climate change have faced setbacks, including the withdrawal of the US from the Paris Agreement and the impact of the coronavirus epidemic on the world economy. DOES COAL STILL HAVE A ROLE IN CHINA’S DECARBONISING POWER Towards the end of 2020, China surprised the world by announcing a set of long- and mid-term climate targets: in September came the 2060 carbon-neutrality pledge, and then in December a set of updated 2030 climate targets.A key target among these is to increase the share of non-fossil fuel in the country’s energy mix to around 25% by 2030,from 15.3% in 2019.

Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world, in large part due to demand from Chinese consumers. Scientists are pointing to these peculiar creatures as a possible source of the coronavirus outbreak in China, where a temporary ban on all wildlife trade is now in force. CHINESE CITIES MOST AT RISK FROM RISING SEA LEVELS The report, called Mapping Choices: Carbon Climate and Rising Seas – Our Global Legacy, published in November 2015, noted that China has the most to gain from limiting global warming to 2C – one of the temperature targets agreed at the Paris climate conference in December.. A 2C cap would cut the number of Chinese citizens living in threatened urban areas to from 145 million to 64 million. BECCS: COULD CHINA ADOPT MORE ‘TREES-TO-POWER’ TECHNOLOGY? Because of the costs involved, China has restricted trials in CCS technologies mostly to carbon capture, utilisation and storage projects, or CCUS, with the hope that cash flows from the utilisation component can help cover part of the costs of operating thetechnology.
