CANADIAN CHILD WELFARE RESEARCH PORTAL In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services (CYFS) is responsible for providing protection services for children under the age of 16 years as well as voluntary residential and supportive services for youth aged 16 – 18 years in need of protection under the mandate of the Children and Youth Care and Protection Act (2011). CANADIAN INCIDENCE STUDY The Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (CIS) is a national initiative to collect data on children who come to the attention of a child welfare authority due to alleged or suspected abuse and/or neglect. The CIS examines the incidence of reported child maltreatment and the characteristics of the children and families investigated by child welfare authorities in the CANADIAN HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNAL ON FIRST NATIONS CHILD In 2007, the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society and the Assembly of First Nations filed a complaint against the federal government of Canada, alleging that child welfare services provided to First Nations children and families on-reserve were flawed, inequitable and discriminatory. LEGAL AGE FOR LEAVING CHILDREN UNSUPERVISED ACROSS CANADA This study reviewed Canadian (a) statutory norms and jurisprudence to determine age at which children can be left unsupervised and (b) safety, child self-care and babysitting programs. NISTAWATSIMAN: RETHINKING ASSESSMENT OF ABORIGINAL PARENTS The Truth and Reconciliation Commission report has challenged Canada to alter the relationship with Aboriginal peoples across the country. They have specifically identified child protection as one area that requires a significant reconsideration around how agencies charged with this responsibility interact with Aboriginal people both on andoff reserves.
