PREVENTING BICYCLE THEFT The VIN- system is a special Danish system which was introduced back in 1942. It means that all bicycles sold in Denmark must have a unique code embedded in the bicycle frame. Compensation cannot be awarded without the code. Cyclists can check whether a bicycle has been reported stolen at the National Police app for Android or Iphone. CYCLE LANES ARE A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE TO CYCLE TRACKS Cycle lanes are a cheaper alternative to cycle tracks, but have a smaller positive effect. The cross profile must be sufficiently wide, and it’s important to choose the correct solution for parking, and especially for bus stops. ONE-WAY STREETS CAN BE AN ADVANTAGE FOR BICYCLE TRAFFIC One-way streets. One-way roads can be planned as an advantage to bicycle traffic. Decisions must be taken about street parking and whether to install facilities or markings for contra-flow cycling. Contra –flow cycling is safe. In Denmark the primary reason for establishing one- way streets is to reduce motor traffic by havingone-way streets
TRAFFIC SAFETY AUDITS AND SERVICE LEVELS FOR CYCLISTS Traffic safety must be up to standard, and one way of ensuring this is by an impartial traffic safety audit. Cyclists can check whether a bicycle has been reported stolen at the National Police app for Android or Iphone. CHILDREN AND BICYCLES Children should learn to cycle at an early age. This is the basis of a healthy, sustainable cycling culture. It calls for an ongoing focus on cycle training and traffic safety on the part of parents, schools, day care facilities, and the authorities. MIXED TRAFFIC MAKES IT NECESSARY TO REGULATE SPEED AND PARKING Mixed traffic. Cyclists can cycle in mixed traffic, but various types of speed regulation may be necessary. Good solutions for bus stops and parked cars are also necessary to keep them from becoming obstacles to cyclists. Cyclists often feel insecure in mixed traffic, especially when the traffic is heavy and moving fast, and there are many lorries. EDGE LANES ARE BETTER THAN NOTHING IF THERE ARE NO OTHER Edge lanes are somewhat better than nothing. Furthermore, wide edge lanes address bearing capacity issues along the edge of the traffic lane. The wider the edge lane, the more Danish cyclists find it acceptable. Parking is allowed on the edge lane unless there are no parking signs. Be careful with edge lanes that are too narrow. TRAFFIC CALMING IS ANOTHER WAY TO PROTECT CYCLISTS Traffic calming can reduce driving speeds so cycling next to cars is safe and secure. Good designs are available and have achieved excellent results. Speed bumps for cyclists can also be installed and car-free schools can be reinforced with signage. GOOD BICYCLE PARKING ISN’T ROCKET SCIENCE Good bicycle parking facilities are easy to install PROVIDED the local authority has the will to allocate funds for construction and cleaning, and ensure the correct location and sufficient space.
