STATE BUDGET 2021
From a public transport perspective there’s not the huge amount of new spending we’ve seen in some years. See the PTUA view here, but some of the notable items include:. $985.8m for 25 new X’Trapolis 2.0 trains and upgrades at the Craigieburn Train Maintenance Facility to help manage them (it’s not clear how much goes to the trains and how much to the TMF) HOW MELBOURNE’S OFF-PEAK FARES WILL WORK An off-peak discount of 30 per cent applies to fares for all journeys made in zone 1 only or zones 1 + 2 on a business day, except where—. (a) touch off occurs before 9:30am on a business day; or. (b) touch on occurs between 4pm and 7pm (inclusive) on a business day—. as those journeys are peak journeys and the peak fare applies. WHO SHOULD GO TO A FUNERAL? I think there are two reasons to go to a funeral. 1. You knew the deceased. Family or friend or acquaintance or colleague. You want to go and grieve for them/celebrate their life. and/or. 2. You know one or more of the bereaved very well, you are a good friend, and you wantto support them.

Ernst died in 1897 and is buried in Harkaway Cemetery. The Wanke family have an important connection PROMOTING “TURN UP AND GO” PUBLIC TRANSPORT Promoting “Turn up and go” public transport. Nothing makes public transport more usable than frequent services, where you don’t need a timetable, you just “turn up and go” — in transport planning circles this is actually known by the TUAG acronym. Go through the terms and conditions and wait for it to install the default apps for that country. 4. Do steps 2 and 3 again but this time choose Australia. You should find the ABC iView app has appeared. Yes, it’d be nice if it just appeared automagically on its own. DO MELBOURNE’S NEW TRAINS HAVE FEWER SEATS? Squirrelled away on Metro’s web site is this technical document, which on page 13 has a summary of seats and total capacity in the different types of trains. Unlike some sources you might find, it takes into account the seat reductions from a few years ago – that was the change that increased the “load standard” from 798 to 900. AUSTRALIA’S TINY TIMEZONE on Australia’s tiny timezone. Here’s something I learnt yesterday: There’s a small town called Eucla, WA, near the SA border. Population: 53. Get this: It has its own timezone, which is halfway between Perth and Adelaide time. The timezone abbreviation is ACWST, though it’s usually called Eucla Time. It’s shared with a handfulof
IS MYKI PASS STILL GOOD VALUE? Via the PTUA, these cost $1600 (plus $50 PTUA membership). Other options include regular Myki Pass, for 7 days, or from 28 to 365 days. Weekly costs for these: Commuter Club $1600 = $30.68 per week. 33 Day Myki Pass $178.20 = $35.64 per week. “STEP-FREE” DOESN’T MEAN DDA-COMPLIANT Mon 6 November 2017. 34 Comments. on “Step-free” doesn’t mean DDA-compliant. All of Melbourne’s suburban railway stations have step-free access to the platforms. Except one: Heyington. To get to either platform involves steps. Heyington is set into the side of a hill. THINGS I DISCOVERED WHEN PICKING UP MY FATHER’S ASHES FROM Things I discovered when picking up my father’s ashes from the crematorium: 1. At Fawkner, you pick them up from the office, not the crematorium itself. If you catch the train there, the office is in a non-intuitive location, back towards Sydney Road.REGARDS OR CHEERS?
For signing off it’s generally “Cheers”, or “take care”, or “regards” if formal email. I personally think “best” is just plain lazy myself, and haven’t seen that usage myself ever. “Best regards” would be acceptable I think. or “wishing you the best” – sounds like you’ve taken some time to bloody well write it out. Regular readers might know: the Frankston and Dandenong lines now have TUAG trains HOW TO FIND THE TRANSPORT MURAL AT SOUTHERN CROSS STATION The gigantic transport mural was perhaps one of the best features of the old Spencer Street station. By Harold Freedman, it depicts the first century of Victoria’s transport — from 1835 to 1935. It was commissioned by the state government in 1973, and unveiled in 1978. Following the rebuilding and (pointless) renaming, it’s been hidden PTV UNIFIED REBRANDING The PTV logo is gradually replacing the Metlink and Viclink logos across the public transport network. It’s just the latest rebranding — remember, some trains and stations have had up to seven different logos in the last 20 years from the old The Met three-pronged logo, to the newer Met logos, to Hillside/Bayside trains, to Connex/M>Train, then unified all to be Connex, then MetlinkSkip to the content

SYDNEY VS MELBOURNE PT PATRONAGE * Post author By Daniel * Post date Fri 4 June 2021 * 5 Comments on Sydney vs Melbourne PT patronage Last year I wrote a blog pondering why Sydney’s rail patronage is 50% higher than Melbourne’s. This has got a fresh airing amid speculation that Melbourne’s COVID-19 spread is linked to greater urban mobility in Melbourne compared to Sydney. I thought I’d quickly look at public transport patronage specifically. Here it issummed up in ...

Balaclava station, the 1981 pebblemix version (which followed a fire, if I recall correctly), before it was demolished and replaced in 2014. GO GET VACCINATED (IF YOU CAN) * Post author By Daniel * Post date Sat 29 May 2021 * 9 Comments on Go get vaccinated (if you can) In our last exciting chapter, back in March, COVID-19 had settled down in Victoria, and largely disappeared. Life pretty much returned back to normal except overseas travel was near-impossible, and you had to wear a mask on PT. It couldn’t last. Another outbreak is now upon us in Melbourne. My view: no matter where you ...SHARE THIS:

STATE BUDGET 2021
* Post author By Daniel * Post date Mon 24 May 2021 * 11 Comments on State Budget 2021 The State Budget was last Thursday, and I went along to the stakeholder lockup to peruse the Budget Papers and quiz the government officials. From a public transport perspective there’s not the huge amount of new spending we’ve seen in some years. See the PTUA view here, but some of the notable items include: $985.8m ...SHARE THIS:

MASKS ON PT: THE RULES * Post author By Daniel * Post date Wed 19 May 2021 * 15 Comments on Masks on PT: the rules There’s been a bit of confusion about the rules around masks and public transport. I’m not here to speculate on whether the rules are needed. I’m not an epidemiologist and probably neither are you. While there’s been no COVID-19 community spread in Victoria for many weeks, the recent case of the gentleman who unwittingly caught...

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO TRAM CAMS? * Post author By Daniel * Post date Thu 6 May 2021 * 8 Comments on What ever happened to tram cams? Yet again, the issue of motorists illegally overtaking trams has been highlighted – by Channel 9 on Tuesday, and the Herald Sun on Wednesday. This follows on from reports as recently as January of motorists hitting tram passengers while breaking road rule 163. Educating motorists has a role here. There have been educationcampaigns in ...

THE BALLARAT RAILWAY GATE SAGA * Post author By Daniel * Post date Wed 28 April 2021 * 17 Comments on The Ballarat railway gate saga I am fascinated with the ongoing saga of the Ballarat crossing gates. At about 11:35pm on 30th May last year, a V/Line train from Melbourne that was meant to stop at Ballarat station instead sped through the platforms and crashed through the Lydiard Street crossing gates. The train eventually stopped about 600 metres beyond the ...SHARE THIS:
