Welcome to Discourse, a new online journal of politics, economics and culture published by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Late in 2016, I went to what I expected to be a routine follow-up appointment with my neurologist for my intractable chronic migraine disease. Instead, I found that the neurologist I had been seeing for 15 years had abruptly left the practice and a new policy prohibiting any opioid prescriptions had been instituted, with no discussion of individualized care plans. Less than 24 hours “POST-JOURNALISM” AND THE DEATH OF NEWS Information matters because it sets the stage and arranges the props for the drama of social and political life. It places boundaries on human action. If you think the ship is going to tip over the edge of the world, you are unlikely to sign up for that cruise. But why should “news” matter? The answer will in part depend on the historical context. In 1920, for many people, news and GROUPS ARE NOT MONOLITHS For anyone who pays attention to the news, it’s hard to go a day without hearing about how difficult it’s become to engage in productive dialogue with others across ideological boundaries. The lament may be bordering on cliché, but it also happens to be true. We are living through an intense period of polarization, which encourages us to interpret disagreements as taking place between two THE FUTURE OF TAIWAN: COMMUNIST CHINA WILL NOT TAKE TAIWAN Just as Adolph Hitler characterized Czechoslovakia as a “dagger pointed at the heart of Germany,” so the Chinese Communist Party regards Taiwan. Geographically, Taiwan is the tip of a salient—a bulge in a military line—with the Philippines forming the southern base and Japan the northern. SOUTHERN BAPTISTS AND CRITICAL RACE THEORY Last week saw the exodus of two huge historically Black churches from the Southern Baptist Convention after a group of six Southern Baptist seminaries issued a statement condemning critical race theory.
