TEACHER WELLBEING INDEX 2020 Education Support Teacher Wellbeing Index 2020 2 Foreword We have all felt the effect of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, both in our personal and professional lives, TEACHER WELLBEING INDEX 2020 Education Support's annual Teacher Wellbeing Index provides a comprehensive and robust insight into the mental health and wellbeing of all educational professionals throughout the UK. This year's report shows more UK teachers than ever are experiencing symptoms that can lead to depression and anxiety, in a significant rise on previouslevels.
COVID-19: TEACHER MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING SUFFERS Half of the UK’s school teachers (52%) say their mental health declined during the first stage of the coronavirus pandemic whilst 67% of senior leaders working on-site at a school or college said the lack of timely government guidance was a key challenge for them throughout. RELATIONSHIPS AT WORK Difficult relationships. Conflict or discomfort among colleagues can result from a number of behaviours, including: Unbalanced teamwork – where one member of the team does not pull his or her weight. NEW DIRECTOR FOR TEACHER SUPPORT CHARITY New Director for teacher support charity. 20th January 2021. Education Support, the UK’s only charity dedicated to the mental health and wellbeing of education staff, has appointed Faye McGuinness as its first Director of Programmes. Faye brings a wealth of expertise after six years at the leading mental health charity Mind, where she was RELATIONSHIPS AT WORK Difficult relationships. Conflict or discomfort among colleagues can result from a number of behaviours, including: Unbalanced teamwork – where one member of the team does not pull his or her weight. Lack of support from a mentor. Disagreements over approaches to CORONAVIRUS: HOW EDUCATION STAFF ARE BEING AFFECTED There is a wide range of issues affecting individuals within the education workforce right now. Some of those are common to the general population, some are specific to educators. Here is what we are hearing from teachers and education staff. TIME MANAGEMENT AND WELLBEING AT WORK Time management and wellbeing at work. One of the biggest challenges most people face is managing their time productively and coping with their workload in an effective manner. As teachers, you may be juggling exams, class preparation and scoring students' writing assignments, among other tasks. Non-teaching staff may be faced with EDUCATION SUPPORT WEEKLY LOTTERY Welcome to the Education Support Weekly Lottery! It may be that we support the same football team, or went on holiday to the same place, or grew up in a similar area. It really doesn’t matter what you have in common but find that common ground and build from there. TEACHING AND THE MENOPAUSE As calls for mandatory protection for women going through the menopause increase, we have talked to teaching staff about the specific challenges of dealing with symptoms of the menopause in an education context.. Anxiety and low confidence . Pamela* was promoted to Head of Teaching and Learning and extremely focused when at 47 she began the perimenopause. STRESSES & STRAINS OF BEING A TEACHING ASSISTANT Challenging pupil behaviour. Teaching assistants often work closely with the most challenging of pupils. Constantly dealing with sometimes extreme pupil behaviour proved to be very stressful for many. Jayne, a teaching assistant from Newcastle explains: “When I was working supporting an individual child 1 to1 all day it actually made me ill.EDUCATION SUPPORT

MANAGING PUPIL BEHAVIOUR Disruptive pupil behaviour is a frustration for many teachers. In our 2018 Teacher Wellbeing Index, 43% cite is as a cause of their physical and mental health issues..
