Some scholars find evidence that chequered cloth was not peculiar to the Scottish Highlanders, but is really a survival of a trait common to all the great branches of the Celtic race. Logan quotes a Roman author to show that the bright patterns shown in ALPHABETICAL LIST OF SCOTTISH NAMES ASSOCIATED WITH CLANS The subject of septs is a contentious one and one which is difficult to resolve with any degree of historical accuracy. There are also endless variations of Scottish surnames and the list below is neither comprehensive nor definitive but is intended solely as a guide to the possible connections a name may have to a recognised clan or family featured in detail elsewhere.THE SCOTS PEERAGE
The Peerage of Scotland, brought out in one volume folio by Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, Baronet, in 1764, was a work which at once took its place as a high authority on the subject with which it dealt. Half a century later a new and revised edition was completed by Mr. John Philip Wood, in two volumes folio. THE SHIPBUILDERS OF ABERDEEN Over 3,000 ships were built in Aberdeen, from world famous yards such as Alexander Hall, Hall Russell, the Duthie’s, the Stephen’s, John Lewis, John Humphrey, Walter Hood, and many more smaller concerns. Aberdeen shipbuilders in the mid-1800’s played a significant role in the establishment of other shipyards in the UK and around the World. BARONETS OF NOVA SCOTIA The Order of Baronets continued, however, and grants of land were made until the end of 1639, by which time 122 baronetcies had been created, 113 of whom were granted lands in Nova Scotia. The Order continued until 1707, by which time 329 baronetcies were made. Sir William Alexander, Earl of Stirling and Viscount of Canada, who was born at LIST OF CLAN SEPTS AND DEPENDENTS The variety of surnames within a Scottish clan do not represent separate and definable sub-clans but instead reflect the vagaries of transition of the Gaels into the English naming system as well as marriages, migrations and occupations.
